i avoided this problem by getting a Forester XT as my tow car. Manual, 4WD, 320Nm at 3000 80% available at 2000 rpm, cruise control and fits in the carport down the back. Don't even notice the mini is on the back.

I two with a PT Cruiser. NEVER had a problem, so if i can do that a commondoor would be fine with a mini. Try and get a small Car Trailer as it seems that the car trailers tend to end up weigi\hing more than the car. MIne only weighs 150kg or so. bring the total up to around 800-900kg . I will be going to hay like this. Have been to Canberra and back like this in a day too. No problem.

Cheers

Aaron

the low down torque of the 5.0 litre is suited to towing in my oppinion. .

Low down torque when the peak ios at 3600rpm? I think not. At 110 kph it is only producing 86hp. When people say they have towed have they done it in the bush for hundreds of km? Towing around the suburbs will tell you nothing. Mine is great around the burbs in the bush it is useless. The diff ratio is to high. They need to lower the diff and put a 6 speed auto in them. Penny pinching bastards that they are would never do that.

Well it's not looking good. You guys all had me worried whether the Commodore will cope.

Anyway, no offers of a trailer as yet.

Towing a Mini should be fine for that Commodore. Our VS actually scorched the transmission oil when towing our caravan for the first time. Had a cooler put in and it's all good.

Towing a trailer and Mini should be fine though, as our caravan would be atleast twice the weight of a Mini/trailer. And it's quite a newer model, so i'm sure they would of fixed the prob. 8)

The VS to the VY had the same basic engines. There was a whole 7KW gain over that time.
The far better option would be to borrow a 4WD if you can. More room in and on the car for your stuff, better for towing and you'll be able to see behind better.

Jan, the commodore will be fine to tow that distance. I have a mate the has towed his commodore rally car behind a auto VS V6 auto ute for 5 years now with out a problem. But i do love towing with the VR4, 4WD & big turbo, its quite funny driving away from my mates up hills in there commodores & falcons towing the same weight as me.

I don't want to put anyone on the spot so I'll just wait and see if he offers.

I realise it's a big ask, loaning someone something that is quite expensive to buy.

I reckon a mini would fit on a motorbike trailer, that might open up the options.

i wouldnt risk mutant on a motorbike trailer, if the worst comes to the worst why dont you go couple of days earlier? just drive the mini for shorter runs, more stops?

jan, dont worry bout the commodore itl b fine, i use my vr v6 auto on LPG gas!!!! in drive the whole time no worries ever, i even got it to do a burnout with the mini on the trailer behind it!!!!!!!

i would lend u our trailer, but it is in no condition to travel that distance, the wheel berrings are on the way out, as is the suspension oh and the tyres go flat!!!!!!! if i know itld be safe it would be ok but its had its time, needs a good service before it could be used for that kind of trip

more importantly then the car u are using to tow with, that no1 even thought of mentioning is the trailer, u have to think about haw safe it is first etc... if u want any advice call me

Rob
