Hey all, looking for some help in diagnosing my clutch problem so i don't end up ordering and changing parts i dont need to.

Symptoms: 1. Clutch permanently engaged (can move freely between gears when engine is running)
2. Clutch arm looks to be enraged as per symptom 1
2. Pedal is rock hard

So, i am thinking slave cylinder???

Just let out some pressure from the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder. No dice, still jammed :roll: :roll:

When you say the pedal is rock hard, do you mean you can't move it at all?

If you pull back the rubber boot on the slave cylinder, how far away is the plunger from the end of the bore? There is a circlip that prevents the plunger from pushing all the way out. Does it move when the pedal is pushed? If it's up against the circlip, you'll need to get a longer pushrod or put a spacer in there.

If there's a gap but the pedal doesn't move, I'd suspect the rubber hose. They can expand in the middle and restrict fluid flow.

Hey guys.

Just my thoughts on this problem.

Im thinking maybe the clutch fork had pushed out of the hole in the release bearing holder. If it was a hose the pedal would be spongy as the hose would swell under pressure.

Just pull the clutch cover of and check if the clutch fork snd release bearing move freely.

Sounds like you might be on the right track. When I said the pedal was rock hard that's exactly what I meant. It has no give at all and just doesn't feel like a blocked hose which would have a slight spongey feel. Can you pleas clarify 'clutch fork' is it the push rod out of the slave or the push rod into the master cylinder?

No, the inner layer of the hose swells shut and the outer layers are still fine.
I have dissected a hose after it has done it.

Thanks DrMini, I am not quite sold that it is the hose but while I am mucking around down there I might as well replace it. Its tight in there, any tricks you could advise for this job?

My Cooper S had a rock hard pedal when it did it.
Think about it, the clutch is already down, the fluid won't return and the pedal comes up for a second bite, where is the next lot of fluid going to go?

Sorry I meant the plunger on the clutch housing. The clutch lever pivots on the clutch housing on has a ball on the end that locates in the plunger.

check that the stop nuts on the bearing carrier are not touching the clutch cover
eg , stopping the carrier from going in

Rock hard pedal generally hose. Replace that, easily done then if its not fixed look at other options.
