I was wanting a 296 or 286 in mine. Will most likely be a weekender. but i was wanting to do it up as a rally ish car.

it's got a 1098 in it so Ive probably got some way to go before I can even warrant getting a cam lol

I run a 282 in the 1360 with 1.5 rockers, since I have jetted the 45 Dellorto properly and got the advance right it will pull from 40kmh in 4th gear (on light throttle). It's no longer a daily but in traffic it's not too bad. I'd say a 286 or 296 would be OK in the `traffic' where you are.

Hi I run a 296 in my car but it is a weekend car too.. i feel that it is still a very streetable cam but i do have fuel injection so that does make it more drivable ..I say buy the car and give it a try, you could always change the cam to a smaller one or get the car tuned once you have it ... or even dial the cam in 2 degrees earlier or later ( i forget which way ) and make the cam come on a little earlier

I had a Wade 1760 (648 equivalent) in my 1293 for a couple of years in my black Cooper S, 45 Weber, sccr 3 synchro box with tall 1st gear, 3.4, dialy driver in Melbourne traffic, late 1970s. It was a bit of a handful but quite enjoyable sounded great even idling at the lights. Not much power down low of course but really got moving when the cam came in, all the way to 8,000rpm if you wanted to. Reliable too, including sprints back and forth to Adelaide a couple of times when it really sang.

When I rebuilt it to 1310 I put in a milder Wade cam (240 or something) which was easier for stop-start city drivability but not quite as much fun otherwise. Of course traffic wasn't quite what it is today back then.

I have a Piper BP285 in my 1380 with twin 1.5" SU's. It's possible to drive on the street and in heavy traffic but I wouldn't call it fun. Mine has enough torque to pull through the lower RPMs until the cam "comes on" but yeah, not really what it's designed for. In "normal" traffic I don't find it a problem but I'm a bit of a sucker for punishment. My only real issue with it is driving in Perth bumper to bumper peakhour can't merge no one paying attention roadworks 20kmph on the freeway no idicators fiasco I call the drive home. Any other time I can deal.

Cheers,
Keels.

Number refers to degrees (approximately) the cam holds the valves open - bigger numbers usually mean more 'acceleration' power at higher revs, but the cost is often less torque (pulling power) at low to medium revs - which is where you want it for driving in traffic, unless like me you enjoy battling with your own car as well as other drivers.

Generally speaking - for daily drivers up to 266, trackday weapons up to 300, racers/sprinters etc up to 320 - but you wouldn't take it to the shops......engine preparation, tuning, fuel, and driving style all make significant differences. I love the character a hot cam gives my engine - my wife hates it (LOL) Have fun! (and have a chat to Chris Ellis in Bundy -he's good value) PS bigger engines are less reactive to hotter cams, but if you put a sprint cam in a 997, you will have a three speed car - stalled, OMG make it stop!!!! and buried up the bumper of the Volvo in front...

Just go for GRs cams. The R13 goes well in my 1360 and is quite tolerable on the street.

So I bought the car after a drive, turns out it was 286 CAM not 296.

Also come with a trailer load of new and used spares including a complete 998 unit and what he said was a 1275 block, I will make a new thread later regarding what some of the stuff is worth

However the 1275 has DCR022 as the engine code on the block, what the?
Is it really a mini engine? sure looks like one but i thought the codes where all 12#####.
