What is the orange light above the red ignition light, on a Cooper S style speedo?
The orange light is staying on.
I thought the orange light was a oil pressure light, but my oil gauge is reading fine.
Any ideas?

I have a feeling that it may be the main oil filter bypass light. If I am right, the main oil filter isn't flowing proprly and is bypassing, so filter needs changing. Correct me anyone if I am wrong :)

Ok. The oil filter has only been replaced recently.
The oil filter is new, as is the oil.

Has the orange light come on after the filter change?

I think the orange light came on around the time of the oil change, as it is only started recently.
Not 100% sure.
Disconnected the wire on the oil filter housing, the orange light is still on.

On UK Mk2 onwards S speedos the 2 orange lights are indicators. Not used for that here. Does it only come on with the parkers or headlights? If so it's just one of the speedo illumination lamps shining on the bezel.
Otherwise, look at the back of speedo and tell us what colour the wire is, if there is a bulb connected there.

On other models it's a pressure warning light.

On a Cooper S it's a bypass warning light, theres no oil pressure light because there is a gauge instead. If original filter head still fitted (ie not spin on) it will have an electrical connector on it.

After 50 years someone may have found another use for the light. It could just be shorting out but you still need to figure out what it is and where. You may have disturbed some wiring with the servicing you have done.

All good
Tonight, I flicked the gauges light switch on the side of the binnacle and the orange light went off.
The orange light on my speedo indicates, if the gauges lights are on or off.
You obviously can't see if they are working in the day time.
How bizarre.

I think what has happened is that one of the globes for lighting the speedo has been pushed into the warning light hole at the back of the speedo.

The globe for the warning light is probably also accidentally in the illumination spot. They are right next to each other's at the back of the speedo

Or....

There's a little rubber tube that is suppose to shade the warning light from the illumination inside the speedo. It may have fallen out of place.
