To sum up,

FOUR Classic Minis in our mob - combined age +120 years - on the trip to Tasmania, totaled some 19,000 miles - one leaking water pump (in the round nose Van) was replaced during morning tea, one float needle (in the run-out LS) was fettled to address overflow, one rewiring of a Tom-Tom (in our Aussie mates' round-nosed Clubbie) and I replaced the knackered inboard QH joints on ROO after getting back. The QH joints barely made it past 38,000 kilometres.

FOUR couples - Steve & Jenny originally from the UK, Keith & Carol originally from New Zealand, our Aussie travel mates John & Lynne from the One Lap in 2011, Elaine born in the US and me the lone Canadian. We got along superbly, had good fun,...and left no one behind!

Not certain if I will get back to Australia for another drive, but ROO was a very reliable little helper for our travels. I plan to drive ROO across the continent to Lexington, Ohio to the Mid-Ohio race circuit for the 55th anniversary Can-Am Classic Mini Challenge races next summer and stop in Wisconsin for the continental Mini Meet East Meets West before returning across the continent to home...some 8,500 kilometres round-trip.

ROO will have Australia flag decals, Tasminifest decals plus a photo album on our drive-about in OZ.

As for Board Members travelling to Canada in future don't be shy!

Merry Christmas & Best Wishes to all for 2014!

Hi Rick & Elaine.

Have a great Christmas and New Year and I hope Roo enjoys his Canadian adventures, and doesn't get seasick on the voyage.

Having driven through every state in Australia with such aplomb he will be a truly excellent ambassador for Australian Minis over in his new home.

Cheers,
Watto.

MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone & safe passage into the New Year!

ROO is halfway home to Canada in port near Osaka...likely to head across the north Pacific aboard the Bosporus Highway, the same vessel it met in Brisbane +3 weeks ago.

There is great interest in the USA surrounding the Chevrolet SS models riding the waves with ROO. Built by Holden in South Australia they sport the 415 hp/450 ft.lb. Corvette V8 and are only available through GM's Chevrolet dealers in the USA that have sold enough Corvette's to qualify to sell the new hi-performance sedan.

Will post a photo of ROO when off-loded at Port Metro Vancouver's Annacis Island dock.

Guess they will be snapped up as collectors models due to the limited edition run now that the plant is closing down?

Looking forward to seeing Roo rolling onto Canadian soil. Have a Merry Christmas Rick

cheers,

CJ

I have a friend, who is a mechanic in a Certified shop, to inspect ROO for licensing in British Columbia. He is also a Classic Mini owner and we have been on several "classic automobile drives" together. He will be thorough!

Awaiting ROO's arrival in port, maybe another 3 weeks.

I take my hat off to you Sir. You have retained your dignity and self respect after receiving such vitriol, and all the while maintaining a standing offer of assistance to any and all Australians visiting your country. The world would be a better place if we all practiced a little of your tolerance.

A belated merry Christmas to you and your family.

Whew! for a simple discussion about a terrific tour of the big island and Tassie, how disappointing to see people trotting out their hobby horses or venting....

Thanks for visiting Rick...and going there and doing that! ...one dope does not make a nation :D
(Hey, you have the Mayor of Tronta giving Canucks bad press! :P )

I must say that travelling to Australia, connecting with family, meeting new Mini enthusiasts and...hitting the road to see the 'big island' in 2011 and to drive Tasmania this year was a terrific experience.

I owe thanks to 3 people in particular - my cousin Patricia who acted on my behalf in the purchase, licensing, insuring and advanced servicing of ROO, John who responded to my early enquiries about buying a Mini and who became a travel mate, and Andrew who sold me ROO and prepared the Window Van - yes we did more especially after the test drive but Andrew did a thorough job as we had agreed...before handover.

There were others contributing, Tony with the no fault electrical work, Graham & Greg on the suspension - and Graham, what a kind & wonderful host in North Rocks, Brett in donating the spare wheel and the Mini Relay that got it from Hay to Brisbane, Dave & Kim hosting before & during the Rylstone Classic, Ken in servicing ROO after the One Lap and both power washing and getting anti-freeze into the system before crossing the Pacific to Canada...

But John & Lynne bought into lapping Australia in Classic Minis, a proposed 10 week/70 day adventure I sent along...we did it and we became lifelong travel mates. More recently, Lynne worked out the maths, accommodation etc. on the 4 Mini assault on Tasmania. We are deeply appreciative of her efforts...and we had a marvelous time with Keith & Carol, Steve & Jenny and John & Lynne heading for Tasmania to deal with the Unfinished Business from the One Lap.

There were others we worked with, had a little fun with and won't forget - Peter and the backward fan, Swampy & the Swamp, Darryl, to whom I introduced the auto wrecker experience, but who was a very effective safety officer in the early driving experiences...and others.

So many positives, so few negatives, such a wonderful Mini experience in Australia. In fact, I may have seen more of Australia than my father's brother after whom I was named. He immigrated to Australia from England fought with the Far North Battalion in WWII, my Dad immigrated to Canada, just 15 years old when he stepped ashore in Halifax, the brothers never saw each other again.

Australia was on my bucket list and the first to be checked off...but not to be forgotten. I'm serious, if you are coming to Canada (via Vancouver) don't hesitate to call on me. It is the least I can do to say thank you for the encouragement, the support, the fun and the memories.

And, I promise to start a thread on ROO in North America.

Halfway home...

After being in Japanese home waters for just over a week - visited Ports of Osaka, Mizushima, Kanaoseki, Nagoya, Gamagori, Sakaide...so may have some Mazdas and Toyotas on board & appears to have bunkered as well - the Bosporus Highway is nearing docking facilities in Yokohama.

I was originally advised that ROO would be leaving Japan Dec. 30/31 (already Dec. 30 local time in Yokohama) on the Bosporus or Northern Highway. Well...the Northern Highway is currently enroute to Honolulu, so that's out.

Maybe my shipping broker here will have an updated ETA for me tomorrow...since I've got to complete import paperwork, pay 5% federal tax to clear customs, and I don't want any dock fees.

Incidentally, for those interested in shipping costs...$2,150 (Cdn) plus $212 ins. premium from Brisbane to Vancouver.

ROO was trans-shipped in Yokohama to the RoRo vessel Curitiba, which is at sea and has an ETA of Jan. 10/11 at Annacis Island in Port Metro Vancouver.

ROO will arrive earlier than originally thought. Still 41 days at sea and in ports.

Weather here is currently mild, no frost, snow or ice. Hopefully a straight forward customs clearance and off the dock to home.
