Hi all.

A quick question, what are these low back seats from? I know it's a Morris but it has a latch that looks like it clips into something. I have a few cars with low back seats but none have this clip that locks them in.
Maybe someone can enlighten me? Maybe there from a van? They don't have a rubber diaphragm so I'm guessing they're early.

I think 1971. But I'm probably wrong.

These seats were fitted to Minis in 1971 the Factory did not stay with the spring type base
for very long in Australia
Not knowing what the front looks like, I would say it is possible that these are Cooper S,
Clubman GT, Or the base Mini Or Van.
The catch on the bottom of the seat was to comply with an ADR
It stopped the seat from lurching forward in an accident
The seat in the photo is a drivers side

I gathered it was the drivers seat, that way you flick the catch from outside the car.
The tops are barely there. Looks pretty pic the bits that are left. Thus black vinyl with 6 pleats from the top to the base.
I thought they pre-dated the rubber diaphragm. Very interesting. Maybe a $$ saving thing in the factory?!

Yep. Looks like 71 clubman seats. (I dont know if roundies had the rail on the floor). But as John said the pattern on the front will tell you.

If The pleats are almost the same width as each other, You can be reasonably
sure that they were fitted to the Base Mini,
On the base model Mini the trim is thinner than the other models
If You are able to have a look at what is left of the trim,
try a little test If You cannot stretch the material easily in the areas that You sit
on it is the base Model Mini, The Grain Pattern on The seat in the Photo
is the same as the Mk2 Cooper S. and is correct for this period.
Re The seat base It Is My understanding that this type was tried
as they did have some problems with the Rubber Type,
But the spring and wire type caused more complaints, It is also my understanding
that most of these complaints were from a major customer, The NSW Police
And to answer Bubbacluby The Round Nose Mini with lift up door handles
had this type of seat fitted, You can take that to the Bank, If you get the chance have a look underneath
a Roundie with lift up handles and you will see a extra bracket welded to the
floor, To hold the bracket that the catch clips on to the same as Your Clubman GT

Again John is on the money (as usual), my 12/70 K with lift up door handles had seats with those clips and the floor brackets were bolted thru the floor, not welded.

You are correct the bracket that the seat clips to is bolted through
the floor, But where the bracket comes through the floor, there is a bracket welded
underneath the floor to strengthen the floor in that area,
Having said that I have seen one or two that had big washers underneath and no bracket

WHat's the downsides with the spring bases?

One of the problems I can recall is where they mounted to the seat
They would often pull through the metal you would then have to drill
another hole to relocate it, Some times depending on the size of the
person driving the car, This process would take place a few times
I know the rubber sometimes does the same thing but not as often
There were other Problems, But I cannot remember what they were
But the result was the seat would sag badly
