Well, it seems a bit crazy to me considering it's an electrical gauge, but I removed all other gauges form the car and went for a drive. Sure enough, the Tacho is noisier than the engine! It's kind of a rattley, vibration type noise, and it only comes into play between about 2800-3400 RPM (you know, right where you spend most of your time driving). I began to open it up to see if I could find the problem, lube it up, tighten it down or generally fix it, but as I got stuck in I started to get worried I was about to take something apart that wasn't meant to come apart.

Has anyone experienced this before? Should I have another crack at taking it apart, and simply go "all the way" this time? Might it be possible to find a new/used Magnolia Tacho for a '98 Rover?

Thanks for any help!

Where does the noise emanate from? Is it the rattling glass?

The Tacho might be electronic but it still has a mechanical meter movement within...if its been dropped etc then the delicate little flower of a movement might rattle or bind...also if the bridge that locates the main spindle has been tampered with, then the movement is gunna rattle around..

Yep, it's certainly coming from inside the gauge, which is evident for the fact that it is quite loud and pronounced only between a specific RPM range. Anyway, I've been contacted by an awesome member out here in Geelong, and he may have an OEM Magnolia gauge for me! Happy days.

If / when I get it, I'll certainly be adventuring into open up the old one and see if I can fix it anyway. These projects are much less dangerous when you've got a spare in hand. I'll keep you all posted.
