Hi all
I have a Pot Joint leaking oil.
I have been told that there should be a "plug" inside the joint on the Diff end that stops oil leaking out of the engine via the spline.
I have taken the drive shaft out with the pot joint inner (the bit with the balls on it) and looked inside the Pot Joint outer which is still on the diff.
I can see the end of the output shaft splines.
There is no sign of any "plug" anywhere ?

Advice please

Phil

There should be a 1" welch plug in the bottom of the pot. Or at least you can fit a 1" welch plug advisably with some sealant/glue

Thanks Matt
Is it the Flat type (slightly domed shape) or the traditional engine block style with a complete flange.

It is the traditional type, but fitted backwards, so that the flange goes into the pot and a careful tap on the back of the plug should spread it tight into the recess. I used an old layshaft as a drift to tap onto the plug.

I advise using a sealant/glue as when i fitted 2, 1 was nice and tight after a tap, but the other was able to be pushed out easily with my fingers.

Thanks Matt
Can I tap the plug in without removing the Pot joint from the Diff. I don't have a tool to pull it off the diff splined shaft.
Or do I risk driving the Pot Joint in further than it should be. The diff spline end is about flush with the inside bottom of the Pot joint.

Best to take the pot off of the gearbox, that way you can get it all nice and clean so the sealant has a chance. I used a product called Stag, but you could probably use a variety of loctite products among other things. I would avoid using silicone though.

The tools to remove the pot include a hammer and a chisel, sometimes even a ball joint splitter (wedge type). Basically you just need to give the pot a good whack and it should pop off. Try to hit the pot itself, and not the diff sidecover, as they are easily damaged, although i have found the the wedge type ball joint splitters can be used fairly well to pop them out by driving them between the case and pot, depends on the exact design of the splitter though. The pot is only held there by a circlip, the same as the outer cv.

You can't hit the pot joint in further than it should be. So when you fit the plug into the pot, if you put it in the wrong way, the splined shaft will most likely knock it out. So as i mentioned before, you fit it backwards to what you might think.

Before removing the pot joint, drain the oil first!!!

Well
I popped the pot joint off using a Ball Joint splitter (the wedge type), easy as.
Cleaned it up with kerosene (makes the garage smell like a "real" garage).
Put a small bead of Stag into the recess in the pot Joint.
Tapped in the Welsh Plug.
Hit it in the middle to expand it.
Checked from the other side to see if it was tight.
Job Done !

Thanks all for the assistance.
Phil
