I have found a 1275 A+ engine for sale engine number:

12A2DJ33

I know the first prefix 12A means it's a 1275 A series.
The second prefix 2D means it 8 valve, SPI, Base, 9.4:1
The third prefix J33 relates to the gearbox and/or ancillaries.

But what does J33 mean exactly?
What sort of gearbox and/or ancillaries does it have?

Any and all information greatly appreciated :D

I think there were only about 4 gearboxes used in the 90s for injected cars.

Standard manual upto 97.
Standard manual after 97 (taller final drive).
Standard Automatic.
Jack knight 5 speed.

Maybe it means jap spec 3.3:1 or something?

The guy selling tells me it's defiantly manual, although the Jack Knight 5 Speed would be great I don't think it was ever part of the engine prefix code!

So I'm still trawling Google in an effort to find something!

Anyone else got any ideas?

Like you I did a few Google searches. This one was a teaser because it has the information you already know but not the next page where J33 may have been explained. I don't recognise the marking at the foot of the page that may identify the publication. Anyone else know?

http://www.guess-works.com/Gearbox/Mini ... attern.pdf

Here's the decoder page on this website but it only has J01, J03 and J92 options for 12A 2D

http://www.guess-works.com/Tech/engine.htm

EDIT: Suggest you PM John Sneddon on here as he will likely know the answer.

Cheers winabbey,

I have found the other pages not listed on Guess-work, it goes from J13 to J21 as service stripped engines then skips to J66 and J77 as higher final drive ratio and 55 amp alternator. No mention of J33! I've also emailed John Guess from Guess-work and he is also stumped!

I guess it's just going to be another to a long list of Mini mysteries! But I shall PM John Sneddon, great idea thank you :D

Are you absolutely sure it's J33? Have you seen the number yourself?

You're right, it does look very much like J33.

When I Google the engine number in full a couple of hits come up for a shipping handling company called Forerunner, they list several Rover Mini's with the J33 all from Japan! So it may be a reference to the car having air conditioning fitted!

The best answer I can provide in accordance with Parts List AKM1217FR dated September 2001 which covers Rover Mini from 1990 on is:
12 - 1275cc
A - A series engine
2 - 8 valve configuration
A - carburetor specification
D - Throttle Body Injection, Base, 9.4:1
J33 - ???

There a number of "J" details relating to various engine/transmission configurations bu nothing like J33.

Sorry I can not be of more help
