Just spoke to Alan at CTS who confirmed it is a genuine car, not re-bodied, as far as he knows. Apparently it came from a car museum in Wollongong. Anyone know its history?

The engine number is 9FXEY 55808 which is in the correct range for an October 1970 car (according to the Cooper S Register), as is the chassis number. He thinks the advert writer made the assumption it is Strawberry White and it may well be the usual Crystal White for a 1970 car. He is aware the badge in the steering wheel should be BMC, not Leyland Australia.

I pointed out the things that could make it ex-NSW Police (SPO41), such as the handbrake warning light, 1 1/2" SU's and Ramflo filters. He is checking to see if it has two-speed wipers, reversing lights, lowered front seats, and also the switch box attached to the handbrake.

Yes there is/was?? A white mk 2 at the motorlife museum in dapto where minis in the gong has our annual show. One of our members used to take it out for a run occasionally to keep it mobile. I believe it was privately owned but on display most of the time. They will know if it is the same car. One year we brought it out of the museum for our show.

EDIT: looks to be same going by my photos of it at the museum (rego sticker in same spot), I never looked that close at the museum it was roped off usually.

So how do the bullet heaters work, where is the fan switch and where is the screen/car lever control?

Phill unfortunately mine is not mounted in the car at the moment however there is a control switch next to the steering column which i will endevour to take a photo of for you. Ill also have a look at Thomo's car next time i see it out and about.
One thing that i did notice on my car, was that the mounting hook brackets that were fitted to the firewall as the car came down the line were cut off to mount the bullet heater.
My car is less than 10 cars in front of this car. Would be really cool to see it in the rear vision mirror again

BMC used the Smiths model RF230 heater so if you are looking for one just Google smiths rf230 heater and you'll find some for sale on Gumtree and Trading Post.

My original October 1970 Cooper S car #2668 (now with NSW Police) had a switch mounted under the parcel shelf to the left of the steering column that looked like a heater switch but it wasn't connected to anything. The car had a typical Cooper S plastic heater when I acquired it. I wonder if it originally had the bullet/beehive heater and the switch was left behind when they replaced it?

There were atleast 3 types of heaters fitted to mk 2's and this was one of them.

the lettering etc. should be 3 dimensional inside the plastic, you can tell that one has been printed flat on the back of the plastic

Phill

My Cooper S 12/70 has this heater as well, but still with the Smiths label on it. 100% original.

Forget "Bullet" its well known as a "beehive heater". The switch can just be seen passenger side of steering column mounted under the dash.

TMK there were about 250 of these produced and the story i heard was the former heater didnt pump out enough air and this was thought to be an improvement (Larry at Car Clinic I think). On the Cooper S there are three captive nuts on the firewall to support this type of heater. This type of heater was previously used in other BMC productions too.

Unsure if it carried carried into the last 112/113 cars the so-called Mk3 by some.

And yes the car is a very good conservation job. It is the one formerly at the Australian Motorlife Museum which I drove on a number of occasions keeping it running with basic servicing. It sounds & drives like a new Cooper S. Zircon White is the correct colour for this car.

I remember seeing a Camino gold Cooper S car at the fiftieth (call it a Mk3) that was completely original with clubman style heater. So based on that the Mk2 Cooper S had
Metal Mk 1 heater
plastic/ fibreglass mk2 heater
bee hive / bullet heater
clubman plastic heater.
Wow it really was BMC at there best.

My mate has a `so-called Mk3' S with the Clubby style doors, it also has the Clubby style heater, with controls to the right of the steering column.
