In my eyes, if it's put together here it's Australian.

It is an interesting proposition, because Mercedes, Volkswagen and many others built CKD cars here too, therefore does that make them Australian?

I was going to make a comment about Cooper 'S's but now I am just being naughty! :)

I've pulled my Mini apart and put it back together again (slightly modified) does that make my Mini a Marty built Mini?

For export purposes the country of origin is the country where the last significant manufacturing step was performed.

I have several Australian made computers at work. They are constructed in Taiwan, but the finishing steps are done in Sydney (they slide in the removable hard drive, stick some stickers on them and install Windows) so they are defined as Australian made. Maybe the stickers are printed here, but I suspect that the local content is precisely nothing, unlike our Minis.

Tim

I would think if it carries the australian production line numbering system , then it is Australian made... but if someone has got a kit and kept it in its boxes, and now wants to assemble it,,,, i don;t know, probably still yes...... what about concept cars or a test mules.... i think people will bend the interpretation to which ever way suits them.

I agree with Monaco....assembled here so Australian Made (along with Volkies etc etc)....however, these cars should be specially treated...as they are probably more prone to rust! :P

John - the key word in your question is built.

from dictionary.com
build [bild]
verb (used with object), built or ( Archaic ) build·ed; build·ing.

1. to construct (especially something complex) by assembling and joining parts or materials: to build a house.

So Minis built in Australia using local and imported components are made in Australia.
