Gday
just trying to figure out how to get my carb to fit
it is a hif44 with a minispares water cooled manifold in a round nose
but with the spacer which is needed for the throttle cable it touches the firewall

so i guess what I'm asking is if there is another manifold i can get that works
or how have others overcome this?

Hey Nathan, I have pretty much the same set up...not much dramas, the k&n air filter does sit in the firewall hole but it's just clear of the back of the speedo (the speedo cable does occasionally get wedged in but I'm getting an angle drive for the cable soon) I'll post pics when I get home for you

I have no problems with my HIF44 and K&N cone air filter. Maybe what JimL says, you need steady bars to push engine forward a small amount.

Hi Nathan
I have the exact same setup in my van and this also happened to me when I first fitted the carby/spacer/manifold.
As jb007, JimL and MonoMini mentioned, once you fit the drivers side engine steady (under the master cylinders to the engine) it should hold the motor forward and the carby will clear the firewall

Also, have a look at maybe using a slightly thinner insulator block like this onehttp://minispares.com/product/Classic/Fuel/Carburettors/GUG705964GM.aspx?1302&ReturnUrl=/search/classic/carb%20spacer.aspx|Back%20to%20search that is 11mm thick.

Another thing I have noticed, is that maybe your vacuum advance take off is on the inlet manifold side of the butterfly when its in the idle position. My understanding is that HIF44's are available with this take off either side off the butterfly. If it is on the inlet side, you will get vacuum at idle which will advance your timing to far. Some cars though had as standard, so maybe others could chime in here. Mine was like this.

To fix:
Measure and drill 1/8" hole 9/16" (0.5625") back from manifold face on opposite side to existing vacuum take off and put in a 1/8" brass tube. Please measure twice, drill once. I drilled a smaller hole, then the 1/8" I drilled nearly all the way through as to create a step. Cant recall what I glued with.
