Morris 1100 told me....
Mini 850 = Australian assembled
Mini Deluxe = Australian made.

He says it is to do with local content rules and Government approval.

We need to be mindful of what CKD (Complete Knock Down) really means. Despite the word Complete not all the required parts to build a car were in the box sent from the UK. According to the parts catalogue supplement for the Morris 850 introduced in February 1961 a number of parts were of Australian origin, identified by a 'Y' in the part number prefix. These include the front number plate bracket, seat covers, interior trim and the headlining. I assume the battery was also procured locally.

A CKD mini still in its crate.

Now THAT would be collectable...

I consider my 1962 850 CKD mini to be Australian built, but I consider aussie mk2 onwards to be REALL Australian made minis because that's when they got a lot of unique features and became less like UK minis (as UK minis also became more unique in their own right).

Just as a matter of interest, CKD or SKD Minis did not arrive one mini in one pack
From memory They came in packs of Twelve So in one case may be 12 complete motors
in another case may be 12 left hand guards 12 right hand guards 12 boot lids and so on.
And there was a big difference between CKD Packs and SKD Packs with the CKD packs there was
a lot more work required, For instance the Bonnet would arrive in, From memory 6 parts
so a lot more assy was required

So basically they sent a ship load of spare parts and from that, cars were made and if they needed more parts they made them here.
At a pinch, we probably could call them Australian, even if it's just to feel good. :)

I drive a CKD Beetle. Assembled from a mix of imported and Aussie made parts in what is now the HSV factory. I'd call it Australian made.

The nuts weren't added until 20 years later! This forum is full of them :?

Hmm, what a coincidence. I just happened to know where there is a mini and it's a cooper, that's still in kit form in the original box.

I Have Not heard from The Doc, What is Your opinion Doc?

One of the reasons I asked this question, Is I want to be sure what
most people call Australian Made, So that if in the Future
I make changes To My Catalogue, What I call Australian Made
Is what most of us call Australian Made
