One quick question, if I'm buying $967 aud in parts and postage $160, will l be slugged by customs

If it's several parts can you ask them to send two packages? Postage may be more but maybe still less then import duties!

Works out that l will save $100 by sending 2 packages! For 2 parts ha

Make sure it's two separate invoices, one for each parcel - not just 2 parcels with the single invoice.

Also make sure they are sent a week or 10 days apart.. customs are a wakeup to split orders...

When getting big orders I get the retailer to send the invoice in an envelope, seperate to the main package.
Try sending the two packages to different addresses as well.

Nope. It's merely a declaration of it's value. As for description of the goods mine will always say parts for 1964 Mini.

A bit hit and miss...

My recent experience - if value (not counting postage) below < $1000 - OK - no duty etc ... appears at your door...
Over > $1000 value - duty, GST & Fees apply... and they can take over a week to let you know it's waiting for payment...
