Hi Kev, where do I get one of these red die springs?

You want imperial size ones.
Red are heavy, blue are a bit lighter. You want 3/8" OD red. You will have to cut it to length. I have some blue ones here but no reds.

Try a toolroom up there if there is one, they may have some red springs in stock.

I think the part that wore on my gearbox was a baulk ring??? Not sure tho, all I know was for its size it's a heavy bugger and it didn't look like a ring but more like a cone ish shaped cog.

Yeah I find 2nd to 3rd takes a bit of skill. I bought my Rod Change KAD quickshift in 1998 I think, not sure if they have improved anything since?

I have had one in my car for about the last year and a half. They provide a very short precise movement and I am very happy with it. I have not noticed any negatives as far as damaging the gearbox at all. As they provide a short shift due to fulcrum displacement I believe if you don't treat this fact with a little respect you could potentially exacerbate any synchro problems present when you fit the shifter. My car has had no problems so I cant recommend them enough.

Had one in my Remote Change when I rebuilt the car late last year. Loved the feel of it. I found in a box of random assorted Mini junk i procured one day so cannot say if it was a KAD or not. I presume not as what I can tell you was the build quality of this particular one was very average. The first time it failed was the two bolts that hold it down to the remote housing came loose and I got a box full of neutrals. Fixed that with some loctite and put it down to me not installing it properly. Over the next couple of hundred Kms, I could feel the change getting more vague and a bit more play in the gears than when it was first installed, leading to difficulty finding gears. Shortly after noticing it I got an angel gear coming off a round about. The small dowel that keeps the shifter from spinning had been pushed into the spacer. Jerry rigged it home, pulled out the spacer, knocked the dowel in with some loctite/araldite/whatever sticky stuff I had and hit the road again. Not to be taken for a complete fool, I put the original shifter and associated parts in the boot. Turns out it was good idea, about 100Km later the shifter was spinning again, only this time the dowel had snapped. I put in the original shifter and now use the short shifter as either a jimmy bar or hammer. I have no intention of going back to a short shifter, but when it worked, I loved it.

Cheers,
Keels.

"......unless the gearstick was hung onto, but that would also happen if the std gearstick was hung onto..."

Shift forks maybe - but I can't see hanging onto the lever will affect synchros... Once the gears are meshed the synchros are trapped and are not subject to wear.. There is a conjecture that the quikshift reduces the time the synchros have to do their job so suffer accelerated wear. Having had a quikshift since 1990 I reckon operator action has a lot to do with the problem. Despite daily use I've only replaced a couple of synchro rings (rings not sets...)

IMHO they take a little while to get used to but I wouldn't be without mine....

Cheers, Ian

I installed a KAD quick shifter just recently in my rod change box, I love the shorter throw which is why I bought it. Don't know about extra wear and tear on gearbox, only negative I have had is occasional 2nd to 3rd stiffness (probably more operator) and the reverse collar rattles when I am in reverse.

I have one and like it.

I can see why you could damage the syncros with one though, I've had one fluffed second to third change and won't be doing it again.

I have one aswell, all gear changes are fine for me.
The only issue I have is the reverse "collar" thingy that needs to be pulled up so you can select reverse, it rattles as I drive. Anyone else have this problem? any solution?

Hi kennomini,
My reverse collar rattles but only in reverse, so I just keep a finger on it

Mine mainly dose it in 4th, I've tried the finger method but it's not the best while driving.

Dose the gear know unscrew from the gear stick? I've tried in the past but it seems really stuck on there.
