Reassembled my mk 1 steering column after painting inner and outer pipes/tubes, and put my new indicator on.

I know the inner column earths on the splined shaft on the steering rack. But for the indicator to work (the light on the end of the stalk type) the outer shaft needs to be earthed also (so when the indicator unit is bolted on it is earthed).

My inner shaft is earthed on the spline. But between the inner shaft and outer column there is the plastic bush at the top and the felt bush at the bottom meaning the outer column doesn't contact the centre to earth it.

The steering column bolt where it bolts the pedal box/dash area will not earth it either because I have painted it black them black.

So how is it supposed to earth out so the indicator light will work?

It could have been reassembled wrong too

I can have quick look when the sun comes up.

I thought in the bullet connectors there was a black or brown wire which needs to connect to earth under the dash? From memory it doesn't earth on the column. There are a few different companies making these switches (non original) and the last one I did had different colour wires but stilled worked ok.

Anyone owning a mk 1 want to comment?

IM thinking there must be a better earth than the steering column bracket that is painted.
