I know the answer to this is "how long is a piece of string?", but I'm interested to know what you experienced folk here think is a reasonable price for a good Cooper S replica.
Assuming that someone has built a replica that has been completely sorted, back to bare metal respray, rebuilt 1275, disc brakes, new interior etc, what is it worth? Genuine cars seem to be going for around the mid 20s. Is a replica automatically worth $10k less?

If it is done really well, and I mean the workmanship not the fakery, and it is not being sold as something it is not, then it should still pull good money.

In my opinion, it is worth what a good non S is worth, because that is what it is. So low to mid teens , with perhaps a tad more for excellence , but from my limited looking at prices , 17500 seems to be a bit of a ceiling no matter what money has been spent.... but just one of many different opinions...

I would say its worth around $15000.

I'd say 1/2 what a real one in similar condition is. If it's done well.

I tend to look at it a bit differently.

If the replica for sale has all the modifications done to it, that the purchaser wanted to do anyway(and of good workmanship); then to me it's a mathmatical equation.

Cost of car you otherwise would have had to purchase + mods + time.

So yes some people asking prices may seem high to some but a good option to others.

Hows this then I have seen a replica with a genuine S plate sell for over $20k ???

Not illegal to my knowledge, the plate mentioned is only a manufacturers plate & is not a legal I.D. for rego purposes (not a VIN plate). Shifty yes, illegal No!!

ive seen replica's advertised for upto $20k, ive seen a reshelled S which id assume is the same as a replica sell for similar money. i think its worth whatever someone is willing to pay, but anywhere between $10-$20k depending on if you can tell if its a replica without looking at the plates if not then higher end if yes closer to the lower end

It was sold to the first buyer as a genuine S but when he sold it he made the 2nd buyer well aware that it was not genuine , the other point is that this was a very nice car and replicas can sell for good money.

Its a bit of a shame really when you can easily spend upwards of $40-50k restoring a car for it to be only worth $10k. I mean my paint/panel cost $8k 13yrs ago, but Id be lucky to get $10k for my car if I sold it. Not worth selling it, will just sit in the shed for the rest of its life. Whereas my SL/R 5000, I spent some coin restoring it, but at least its got some value to it.

So tell me guys. What is a real one? Everyone goes on about so called replicas and gives them bum rap but... near all current Morris Cooper S are a replica of some sort. Replace a switch with one from a Mini Deluxe, does that make it a replica, or a panel or 2 from a Mini K, maybe new pistons, are they genuine Coopers, probably not.
Stick an ID plate on from another Copper S and it's real... or is it?
I'm restoring a 1968 Cooper S, been doing it for just under 19 years (99.5% complete), has cost me well over $40K.
Every part is Cooper S except for a few period option such as Superfine brake drums, Minilite Wheels, Aston fuel caps etc. No ID plate.
In my mind you restore a car like this because it's what you want not what others want, I never intend showing mine, nor do I ever intend selling it.
It's for me and me only.
If you restore to sell, then my guess is you are wasting money.

$2000 per year is a cheap hobby if you ask me! & you have a Cooper S in the end.
