You will have to pull the rocker gear and check for wear. Then shim the rockers to make sure they sit as close to central on the valves. In the photos it looks like cyl 2 rockers are very close to the shaft screw locking plate. What is the history on the motor. Has this issue just happened or has it been getting louder over time. What lift camshaft.

For my own education...Should the rockers be centered over the valve stems?

Not on a 1275, due to the big inlet valves the exhaust valve centres got moved outwards, away from the inlets.
There should be a flat washer between each rocker and the rocker post, for exhaust rockers only, on a 1275.
This doesn't centre them, but it helps.

I had a very worn valve stem which rattled something chronic.

It was also very hard to find and only located once I disassembled the head.

If there is work, then you are lucky that the head is a fairly easy beast to work on.

You can take the rockers off with eight nuts, and disassemble to inspect in an hour.
Rocker shafts are inexpensive, and so are replacement rockers, and guides too for that matter...

I reckon there could be a few problems going on there...

are the rockers tapping on the stud washers?

why does the little stud on #2 have an extra washer on it? I bet someone has damaged that thread, stripped the nut and put the extra washer on it to pack it up. Shouldn't be using nylocks on those either

The rear studs have nuts with inbuilt washers AND normal washers

As said above it's very easy to remove it.
I'd do so, check it out, the rockers too. These sintered rockers are not repairable, all you can do with them is fit a new shaft. Or bin them and find a better set.

I'm not afraid of removing the head, just didn't realise that this mini was going to be quite the project in itself ( I have two unfinished projects in the shed at the moment = Kingswood ute and Pontiac firebird!) oh well! i'll update this thread again once head is off and stripped!

You may get away with removing the rockers alone. If you find the problem with work rockers or the shaft, then you can stop there and put it back together without creating a big drama. Two split pins, one rocker shaft and/or rockers as required.

A set of pressed rockers are just about scrap value and very easy to come across. If the rockers are worn you can replace the sintered ones with pressed type for next to nothing on top of the new rocker shaft (about 30 dollars for the shaft I think?).

There's much worse issues. I like working with rockers. They're nice and simple :)

If you need to go on, then you will know from the condition of the rockers, and go on from there.

cripes! one week became a month! sheesh! ok head is off. are mini heads hard to remove. I unbolted everything, went to lift the head and... it wouldnt budge! after much swearing i managed to lever it of. i'm still yet to disassemble the head. (dont have a valve spring compressor yet)

would a very faint chip on the bottom of a pushrod cause the ticking?
noticed that the bottom of the exhaust pushrod on pot #1 has a slight chip

will update again once head is dismantled with pics
cheers

Hey again forum heads on closer inspection after work it appears the exhaust valve on pot 1 has receded into the head further than the others
