So ive spent the last hour searching the forums and then running back out to my car to check and I don't have a voltage stablizler at the back of my speedo.. I have 12vdc going into the fuel gauge and 7.7vdc coming back out.. Has this stuffed the gauge or will once I get a stablizler fix it up. Fuel gauge playing up that's why I've been fault finding. I was sus on the after market temp gauge when the previous owner told me the car always sits at 140*f which is 60*c.

The extra volts won't have hurt it, it just won't read right as you said.

they do get pretty hot with 10v going through them... 12v makes them quite hot indeed

Are they a "off the shelf" item.. Don't really feel like paying postage on 1 item. Just spent $400 on minisport and don't "need" anything else at this stage "want" on the other hand a different story. Haha

Spoke to him Wednesday. Ordered ;-) hopefully fixes the temp gauge it's some cheap n nasty thing from autobarn owner before last put in.. Pretty sure he pulled the power for it off the light switch for the tacho.. So ill move that to come off the stablizer as well.

Only the original Smiths gauges need the 10V stabiliser, all the aftermarket ones whether rubbish or not use a 12V feed.

"Original" (as in the first ones they used) were 12v... The voltage stabiliser was fitted later.

If your fuel gauge flicks instantly to its "reading" then its the 12V version. The later 10V style sort of creep up on the reading....

I have a 10V fuel gauge with a 12v temp gauge....

Mind you, the original UK ones may not what BMC (Oz) fitted ?????

When I said `original' I meant the `original fitment' Smiths temp gauge particularly, I wasn't thinking of the fuel gauges..
Smiths did aftermarket temp gauges that had a smaller shroud than the Cooper & Mini K ones, these were all 12V feed, not 10V.
As are most aftermarket brands, cheapo or otherwise.

I think the speedo is in need of some love even tho is has 8k miles on it.. Speedo reads 80mph at 100kph and just went for a drive before and noticed the speedo would go up on speed but wouldn't drop down unless I tapped the glass then it slowly fall back to "correct" speed..... Grrrr

That might be the speedo cable, if the inner cable is a touch too long it can load up the spindle and put pressure on the needle. Undo the top nut on the cable a little a little and see if it fixes it. If it does you can grind about 1 or 2mm off the end of the inner.
If it doesn't fix it the speedo might need a service (clean and lubricate) by an instrument shop. (but being a new speedo you wouldn't think so!)

These new speedos from UK are now made in China apparently.
I have a 200KMH one, bought from Minispares, allegedly made for a 3.444 diff.
There is a 3.647 diff in now and it under-reads, go figure! It should over-read by 9% or more with this diff.

But I agree with Morris, it shouldn't stick...

Previous owner said when I got it she just had the cable replaced.... Mayb they stuffed up cos its a 850 with a 89' 1275cc in it and mayb they got speedo to suit the original 850. ?? I took it out to pick up dinner had the iphone app going to actually see my speed and at 60 it was jumping between 60-80mph.
