Usually when they jump rhythmically all the time it is a little kink in the cable.
Pull the cable out through the top and if it won't lay pretty straight on a flat surface, replace it.

Yeah that could be it cos it's been stable since I picked up last weekend and during the week playing round with the fuel guage wires I might have slightly bent the cable trying to get my hands and multi meter in there.. The cable just the save as a push bike gear/brake cable yeah ?

No it's not like a bike cable, it is a long, spiral wound spring with the ends made square.
There are a few lengths- roundie, early clubby, and later clubby (push-on speedo connection instead of screw-on).

It's best to buy the new cable complete, and lube it before fitting by smearing molygrease on the inner. Leave the top 100-150mm dry or it can get into the speedo and f it up.

Ohh. I swear I saw one day someone's said it's just a bike cable. Meh oh well I'll try loosening off the nut today n see how she goes. But if I do have to replace it do u match the cable to the speedo or motor ?

You match it to the car type for length, and speedo type (screw on unless late Clubby). I'm ignoring Rovers here...

What car is it...

Don't forget that due to the magnetic drive the speedo can be calibrated quite easily. Being mechanically driven, the odo is a different kettle of fish.

Cheers, Ian
