Found a 1275 engine and gear box on Facebook of all places. Asked the bloke what he wanted for it he said 800. I dont really have 800 to spend but agreed to it.

He gets back to me and says ive been offered 1200. And that our agreed sale is now off! Gets under my skin! I would not call myself educated in terms of engine and mini knowledge but I was comfortable that I had found myself a 1275 for my little clubby.

Upsets me that morals dont exist!

Am I being to touchy? Or is a deal a deal?

Lol I find it hilarious that the term etiquette and Facebook are used in the same sentence

Sometime ago on Gumtree an individual advertised a Mini Parts Book. I contacted him immediately offering $50 which he accepted. Next day he emails me to say that he had been offered $100 and our deal was off.
Same issue.

I was selling a bike on gumtree a couple of months ago, I exchanged a few texts with a kid and he said he was pretty keen on buying it and gave me an offer that was ok. So he said he would come around that weeknd and 'most likely buy it'.
That arvo a guy called me who turned out to live only a few minutes away, came around with the full amount in cash and bought the bike. When I called the kid to tell him he got pi$$ed off that I 'sold it from under him'. What was I meant to do, tell the bloke "Sorry some kid said he is 'probably' going to buy it so its no longer for sale". Is that bad selling etiquette? I though it was ok but kinda see where the kid was coming from

Maybe its just me boys. If I agreed to something I would stick to my word. Id be super pissed off with myself. I offered to transfer cash straight away then figure out pick up.

One day Ill find a 1275 for my cluby!!!

Oh FYI JimL "most likely buy it" is not a commitment in my book.

In your case I agree it was poor form on sellers behalf, considering you wanted to pay straight up. It annoys me when people treat a regular private sale like an ebay auction.

Dont worry, you'll find a motor, just gotta be in the right place right time!

So its not just Adelaide then

My pet hate is when you have no shows.
You promise it to someone and they either don't show up or call the next day with - I had a car accident, My wifes pregnant, Got called into work, lost your address, car wouldn't start, Had to go to hospital, I have heard them all.
I keep my word but not many others keep theirs.
Lately I have made a point of saying first in first served and I wont hold an item. I do agree that the advertised price shouldn't go up if they agree to sell it to you.

buying stuff online is always a pain especially if dealing with private messages. but im glad i havent had any issues with buying bits from members here, even had a member send me a part to see if it worked before paying for it as he no longer owned a mini to test it on.

anyway if its a done deal then its sold end of story, they guy is a dick for selling it to someone else even after you made the deal. sounds like he was trying to barter you to offer more money for it.

100% mate that is a low dog act
(assuming you had both committed and the terms clear and accepted)

The seller can choke on their extra money - Shake someone's hand on a deal give them your word - what does that mean - your honour and integrity are on display as a buyer or seller- obviously the seller had neither.

Don't worry mate if the seller is dodgy the motor probably wouldn't be much better - you will find your 1275 in time and it will come from an previous owner that can stand up straight and hold their head high.

Enough said

Chris

1275 on gumtree, but it comes with a full resto LS in NSW might be able to get him to sell you the engine separate for the right offer http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/st-clair ... 1042812655

$800 to 1200 is a big overnight jump. I bet he has not sold it for $1200.
He might even still have it.

I feel your pain. I'm presently going through something not dissimilar but the seller is in the right in my case.

Fellow in VIC on another forum selling something for a 4wd I'm after. Ad clearly says pick up only - not possible for me due to his location. Write a response in the ad saying I'd love to buy it if it wasn't pick up only. Later that day I sent him a PM saying if he changes his mind on postage I'd do a direct debit straight away; and I could even organise a courier to pick it up at my cost/organisation to make it easier for him. Later that night (hours after I'd sent the PM), he advertises on a Facebook forum with the same caveat pick up only. Some guy says he'll take it straight away. The buyer is in Horsham, the seller in "yarra ranges" so pick up looks like being next week sometime. I could've paid him today and picked it up by courier by the end of the week, now he'll have to wait and probably get jerked around by the other guy when it could've been done and dusted.

As I said, he was very clear on the pick up only in both ads and that's his perogative. Just a bit galling when he has a buyer ready on the internet forum that morning but then readvertises it on FB later that night. He has responded to my PM and said if the buyer falls through, he'll get a quote on postage for me.

Such is life. He is in the right in this case for sure. In your case, I agree not an ethical act. The other poster is probably right, if he is that unethical, would he hide problems or issues with the motor too?

And in the most probably buy it bike case - that's a generational thing that myself as an older person, just doesn't get it sorry. You were well within your rights in my opinion. First in with the cash is definitely how I will go from here on in.

Good luck with your search.
