Hi
This is a common problem on rebuilds. The water is coming up past the thread in the head most likely.
Can be fixed in a few ways, easiest is to drain the water blow dry down the hole with air watch for splash back leave cap off also.
When dry use hi temp gasket sealer on the thread and also fit a 5/16'' flat washer under the lock washer and cover with sealer (underside) refit the bolt and wipe off extra sealer. Let the sealer dry for a few hrs. and fill with water. No coolant for a few days is best.
You can also fit a stud with sealer this is how the original design was.

I always use permatex on the gaskets and black hi temp sealer on the bolts/studs, clean the holes out with a drill bit etc don't take to much material out just the corrosion.

Hope this helps

Darren

Hey mate cheers for that. I put brand new gaskets on under the housing and the engine steady bracket, now its leaking there and coming up the bolt. I put permatex 2 on the gaskets and on the bolt and it still didn't seal. I'm gonna try it all again. I'll try using hi temp on the bolt this time. It's only one bolt giving me grief.

Hi DVSMNI
there used to be a sealant called QH head stud sealant
used it on Holden 308 head studs that bolt down into the water jacket in the block
dip the thread in the sealant , torque up and let it set
seals the threads

Holden head stud sealer is great stuff. I used to get the genuine stuff from the dealer.

thread tape works well too.

the pepper tries to find its way out and form a seal when in contact with air.

think I mentioned my filler rupturing and while the spare rad was getting o/hauled I have it running with no leaks and a good size desert spoon of white ground pepper in it.

Sounds pretty normal to me.. The holes for the thermo bolts sometimes (usually???) go into the water jacket, A bit of gasket goo/sealant on the threads of the bolts or bottom of the studs will fix it.

Cheers, Ian

Right well I pulled the thermostat housing off put new gaskets on and used permatex #3 on all the surfaces and gaskets. Wrapped all the bolts with high temp thread tape and put it all back together. I did how ever notice that there was a pice of the innerwall of the head sitting in the antifreeze. Pulled it out had a look its the bottom of the thread of where the bolt goes into. I topped the radiator up with a bit of antifreeze and water and run the car for about 5 mins and then boom antifreeze every where. Its only coming out of that one bolt. Is this head stuffed or can I keep using it cos I'm not sure? Never had this problem, just wana drive the blood van, haha.

Apart from the advice above, you could try and disconnect the engine steady until you are sure everything is set. perhaps a bit of lateral pressure is being applied.. agree with holden head stud sealer good stuff

I think its just trying to seal that one bolt because the wall where the bottom of the stud is gone and its gone through into where the water/ antifreeze is. I think when it gets hot its just drawing it up bolt. I'm gonna go pull the bolt out and try seal up around the top of the bolt and down the hole.

It might be cracked in there, if so I'd think about fitting another head.
