I will get UNF as well just in case, tho it doesn't look fine enough to be UNF... and the UNC nut _almost_ fits, its not crossing/damaging the threads, it just jams up after a few turns.

I'll find out for sure soon enough I guess

sorry, there was meant to be a question mark after the UNF (as in "it's UNF?" )

I went out and measured the thread on a gearstick - it's 18tpi and matches a 5/16 UNC bolt. I couldn't find a UNC nut, but I did screw a gearstick into a suitable thread on a gearbox casing....

Thanks for checking... after you posted this, i decided to give it another go.

I used a spanner to wind the nut on and off a few times, turn out the thread was just gunked up with the rubber from the original knob...

my new gear knob is now installed :-D

Hopefully its on there nice and solid. Unlike the custom one I had in my first mini..
I got one of those piston shaped ones that was held on by grub screws. When I was doing my licence test with the local cop , it fell off. Haha  ... luckily he was a country cop and just laughed about it.

Is it customisable with hats and hair?

Love Lego!

You must have found the only fun stopper with a sense of humor that day!

Its on there nice and tight, with a nut under it and another inside of it screwed down tight on each other.
I'm going to fill it with casting resin on the weekend to make it a bit more solid.... either way, its not coming off by accident.

unfortunately there are no customization options, I would have loved an astronaut helmet!
Its actually a pencil sharpener... found it while browsing ebay a couple of weeks ago.

I knew a guy who was pranked by his mates (he claimed). They broke into his car at night and replaced the gear knob with a large dildo. At least thats what he said had happened...

Now I expect the PC gearlever knob police will get you for not having 1234-R engraved on it..
Not that it ever did...

Not that there is any actual rule regarding this.

True, but that doesn't stop the constabulary from hitting ricers up with it. It ranks up there with not enough water in the washers..
