Hello,

I have just recently rebuilt my 998. My first engine rebuilt yay for me!!! Anyway it starts up and sounds fine however keeps over heating. I have taken the thermostat off to see what happens and it keeps over heating. There doesn't seem to be any blockages, water is running freely through the radiator and through the engine but it keeps wanting to over heat. I'm not much of a mechanic and was wondering if anyone had any idea what I've done!!!!

Thanks in advanced

maybe your temp guage/sendor isn`t working/reading correctly

is it gushing water & hissing & gurgling?
or are you just relying on the temp guage to tell you it`s running hot???

A lean mixture can cause it to run hot can't it?

Is the radiator cap sealing properly?

Can I ask was the engine overheating before you rebuilt it?
What did you renew that has to do with cooling?
Was the oil pump replaced? Is there plenty of oil at the rockers? I once put a head gasket on the wrong way.

My 1100S was overheating when I bought it.
Flushed the radiator and then fitted the fan the right way around and now it is fine!
Have you checked the fan ?

What temp guage are you using? Electric or manual?

Thanks everyone for your help. I have fitted the fan the right way. Radiators been flushed. The water pump hasn't been replaced but nothing is erased inside it. Oil pump hasn't been replaced, double checked the head gasket. It's over heating while it is stationary. I've obviously have done something wrong but just cant work it out.

A engines coolant will always get hotter when the engine is running and stationary cause you aint moving and no extra air is going under the bonnet dont just rely on the fan to cool it when stationary

When they dyno test cars there is usually a huge 240 volt electric fan in front of the cars to stop over heating cause the cars are going no where

If your running a plastic yellow fan i reckon there crap go for the white plastic or steel yellow ones as they have more fins but are no longer available new like the yellow plastic ones are i think

Is it stationary in traffic or in the garage when your working on it

Hi. three simple things that need confirmation to rule out as possible contributors to this problem.

Timing, ( as per Simon)(7 static i think but check( , also cam timing , could you have missed a tooth and not lined the dots up? (have to take timing cover off to check)

Running lean, check no airleaks around manifolds( spray brake cleaner or something into seals and see if engine lifts.... this can really cause overheating n(cherry red exhausts) if no leaks then increase mixture richness to see if it improves idle etc

Radiator cap seal..... are you sure it is not failing????

Do the easy ones first, before any dismantling Good luck

Stuck thermostat? Boil the thermostat in water, and see if it opens
