To be certain, just drop by the tyre place and have them inspect the damage. They will give the go or no go on the tyre.

Yeah, i've just spoken to them and sent the photo's through so see what they think.
They want to see them in person to be sure, but yeah, I really just want to be sure its safe to drive it to them as it is..

I dont particular want to be spending more money on spaced drums, but I doesn't look like i have much choice.

I guess the best thing to do will be to get some spaced drums, put them on... then drive to them and get them to make sure the tires are ok to continue using.

so annoyed

There is the option of widening the existing drums just a little with spacers, but it may cause problems at a roadworthy in the future I believe. An old trick used to be to spin the centers out of old drums on a lathe and use these as the spacers. This would give a 1/4" or so of extra room.

Still, you will like I am sure the way the wheels fill out the arches once you finish the changeover to the new drums.

I used the drum centres as spacers when we had a problem similar on the Countryman.
No swapping studs needed as it's only about 5mm
Worked a treat.

I've got some spaced drums on the way now.. so they should fix the problem.

I thought about spacers, just to save some money, but id rather spend the money and make sure its all legit and legal.

especially since I take kids in the car some times...

Thanks for all the help guys... hopefully i can get these new drums on without too much trouble.

If the new `std' size(7") drums won't go on, check the diameter of the old ones.
It is common here for brake shops to machine old drums to either +1/32" or +1/16" diameter and supply oversize bonded shoes to suit.
If you have this problem just buy a new set of std rear shoes from your Mini parts supplier.

When you drop in for that "all clear" . Make sure they give it to you in writing.

I wonder how much heat got into that section from the friction??

Yep, I'm pretty bloody annoyed.

and yes, its just lucky that I discovered it now, and not when the tire exploded on a long trip.

Once i've got the spaced drums on i'll take it to them for a proper look and get the all clear in writing... i might even take it to another tire place for a second opinion.

I had a simular issue with my mini, I let my tyres wear much more than that and I didn't have any problems over the life of the tyres. IMO they are fine and safe to use.
