Hi there

So I was showing my friend my Mini, and he seems to think it may be a matic rather than a deluxe. How can you tell the difference? He seemed to think it's a Matic because the support bar behind the grill is on an angle rather than vertical. But I'm not 100% sure.

Cheers
James

Could be a Cooper S if it has the diagonal support bar! ;-)

Haha I wish, it doesn't seem to have any of the other traits of an S

No tabs in the boot, no brackets for the boot board and just an aftermarket RH fuel tank bracket.

the only numbers I've found on the car is on the drivers side of the firewall stamped with 26786. Nothing on the rad shroud.

Car is a bit of a mystery to be honest haha

It's probably had the front panel replaced some time with an S one. Or it once had an oil cooler?

Matics had the usual vertical brace, not the angled one.
Mine is angled now `coz I cut and welded it (with some donor bracing) to fit a cooler in.

I've see a number of vans with the angled brace as well. No hard and fast rule it had to be straight up and down it seems.

By chance, is the bottom lip folded back?

Yeah maybe it has been replaced, I just can't see anywhere where it's been cut and welded.

At one point in time the only grille panel you could buy in Australia had the angle bracket,
I would check the engine number on the body plate, and the front sub frame

Hmm that is highly possible then that it is just a replacement.

There is no body plate unfortunately and the sub frames have been converted to dry suspension as well.

Did the deluxe have the flap thing under the dash for the fresh air heater? Or was that a matic only thing? (or did other models have it too?)
