With the home sandblaster that i've seen people found at supersheep, would it be useful for me to clean up my steel wheels eg get rid of surface rust, paint etc to make prep it for painting..

And if so.... after blasting when Ihave a bare steel wheel.... surely i have to cover the non-presentable surfaces (inside tire and brakes side face) with something to prevent tin worm....

waz up with that?

:)

ooh... just noticed... you can see the wedding ring in the avatar :)

You can't just go over the old rust and paint and expect it to stick. I don't know if sandblasting wheels is the right way to go about it, but is certainly fast.
The inside tyre surface can be painted, there's nothing touching it.

Maybe check how much powdercoating costs. I had some rims for my 4x4 blasted & powdercoated for $40 each.

My mustang's wheels cost $30 each to powdercoat black. I'd do it again, no worries.

In regards to the sandblasting, it might not be worth having your own machine if you're only going to do blasting every now and then. It's SLOW and dirty. You can use your time better on other things. A bag of sand costs about $50 and it doesn't last forever. It'd be much cheaper to send the wheels out (some powdercoaters even do their own blasting).

If you do get a sandblasting unit, use some layers of clear acetate over the INSIDE of the window to protect from the sandblast and just peel the layers off like the bike racers do. I'd recommend a vaccumn system to extract the dust too. Otherwise, you can't see a thing in there!

Speak to a few places to see who blasts AND powdercoats. Otherwise, you'll have to get the wheels taken from the blasters (or pick them up yourself and take them) to the powdercoaters.

And there's HEAPS of colours the powdercoaters can do now (aside from white).......I THINK they might even be able to do a clear these days....don't quote me on that though!

Oh, and you need to get them coated AS SOON AS POSSIBLE after blasting. They rust up VERY quick after blasting (keep fingers off!!).

It could be done, but wouldn't look good at the join in colours.
Better powdercoat one colour, and paint over it in parts with another.
