Unless it was made by a big company it will have home made on the VIN. The last 2 trailers I purchased were built by smaller companies and were engraved as home made. I have an 8x5 single axle box trailer at the moment and will be upgrading to a more mini friendly trailer soon. Not sure what style.

Sad to say that one turned out to be a bust. Definitely homemade, supposedly in 2013 and the rust is bubbling the paintwork off all over and plenty more underneath  needs a complete strip down and repaint if you wanted to keep it long term.

Ok guys, been hunting around the web and the sales yards and I think I have a fair idea of which way I am headed. The tilt trailers look to be a very interesting option however they come at a hefty price which if i was going to use it frequently a new one would be easily justified, given that I am going to be a infrequent user I am going to stick with a traditional design to save some coin (if there was such a thing as a decent second hand trailer it would have been an option but to be honest everything I looked at was trash).

I am looking at a variation of the trailer pictured below:
12x6 floor center 1/3 removed to reduce weight
Wheel arches lowered to a max height of 150mm aiming for 100mm above the deck
12" rims with light truck tyres
Front mounted tool box
reinforced skids on tail
Image

I am expecting this to be low at the rear as it is but one thing that I have considered is whether to add a 100mm drop beaver tail to the rear? What are your thoughts? Should it have a sufficient approach angle (1800 ramps) or would it be best to add the beaver tail? The only other thing I was considering was trying to move the spare from the draw bar to maybe a vertical mount on the front left?

Hi, have you thought of the guards being axle mounted? That would reduce the high of them heaps as the clearance would be minimal.
I wouldn't worry about a beaver tail as you are more likely to get hooked up somewhere (driveways, fuel stops etc). If ramp angle is close you can always use the jockey wheel a bit to angle the trailer better.

Hi Womble99,

Everyone on here will have their own opinion of what's right and wrong for a car trailer, and the rest is up to you mate.

I was lucky enough to start off racing with a excellent tilt trailer custom made for a mini, and have enjoyed the benefits of compact, lightweight and absolute ease of use. I have also in the past owned a larger tandem axle race trailer with beaver tail, spare wheel carrier, fuel carriers, toolboxes and all the gear. If you are ONLY specifically towing a mini a big trailer like in the photo you provided is overkill, too big, and too heavy, the initial purchase cost of a used quality single axle tilt trailer could be higher than a cheap nasty heavy trailer, the future benefits in costs and connivence are as follows.

Less wear and drag on the tow vehicle - better acceleration and braking (safety and fuel usage)

Cheaper registration for lighter weight carrying trailers (in NSW anyway)

No pinch point damage the underside of the mini exhausts etc, and winding jockey wheels for improved approach angle

No ramps

Smaller for storage

Easy to move around and hitch on the tow bar

As mentioned earlier much easier to manoeuvre on narrow roads

If it's a smaller trailer you are less frequently requested as a towing service.

As it is an expensive purchase I would wait for something to come up similar to what Coatsie purchased, which seems like good value, I think anything under $2000 will normally need some work.

Just my 2c mate and good luck.

Chris

If your after a more general purpose trailer that can be used for a mini, maybe consider a custom 7 x 5 box trailer.
I made one so that the front folded down flat (only to clear the front, wheels were still in the tray) and the rear tail board folded down to a beaver tail which the rear wheels sat on, it was sprung with 14" wheels, ramps were only about 1m long and I could still load my old race car with a bit of extra angle from the jockey wheel.
I will try and find a pic if you want? sold it to a mate now as I needed a bigger trailer for the wife's torana.

That's ok Greg, I already have a 7x5 trailer for general purpose stuff. I wanted to go to a proper trailer where I don't have to exercise the ultimate care trying to load my car each time into a space barely big enough and risk damage.

I know the traditional design looks to be over kill and I agree it is, however if there was a reasonable second hand market in Adelaide which there doesn't seem to be one I would wait but then how long do you wait?

Down here I could get one of the backyard bandits to build this for about $2500 and it would be a piece of crap. I have seen lots of those around this last week. I have been talking with the company who built my last trailer they have been through each option I have found and provided quotes to build. Yes they suggest a standard 8x5 trailer as the cheapest option. However they were happy to work with me to see what could be done to modify the drift car trailer version to suit a mini, end result they believe the smaller version will come in under 400kg which for a tandem is pretty good.

Is it the perfect trailer, no, I know that but I can't justify nearly an extra $2000 for a tilta which seems to be pretty good or the $5000 for the fully hydraulic one I found in towoomba which was sweet.

My trailer is 3000 x 1500 inside and is multi use. The mini fits on easy but can't open doors however that's no big deal I just climb in the window. To wind window up and down I leave the 1/4 vent
unlocked. Trailer is galvanized and single axle.

Too big for a mini really but these trailers are worth a look if you like the Neva type but don't have $$$

Made in Brisbane by a crusty old engineer with too many cars.

This is my trailer that I built , yes it's tandem but it tows like a dream it has hydraulic disk brakes and a 3000kg load rating ... It weighs in at 420kgs .. It's a simple thing with alloy ramps and a electric winch

I'm currently building another trailer for a fellow mini addict , which will be single axle with springs and should be under 250kgs once completed

If you are interested in having one custom built , drop me a PM

Cheers
Beanie

^ indeed a good example of a nice trailer. The wheel straps are an absolute breeze, too; as are the ramps which locate alongside the guards.

I was looking at the wheel straps, it looks like the fastening points were added after the middle photo were taken? It certainly does look very neat and I have sent Beanie a PM.

You can see the retractable hook part in the middle image, but the wheel chock was added after (removable) once the perfect balance spot was achieved - Beanie can confirm!
