Anyone know for sure what the torque should be for shanked wheels nuts and flat washers? Running Revolutions and just not sure if the normal torque is dictated by the wheel stud size or the tapered style nut. Cheers

I run rose pedal rims on my race mini and set the straight shank wheel nuts at 50 ibf ft, never had any issues.

Same, and I run 13x7" Revolution RFX.
The only time they ever came loose was before I started using a torque wrench.

No offence intended here but--> anyone writing a book about minis 30 years ago may not have experienced such worn or stuffed-with components as we are finding these days.

You should put your heart & soul into everything you do.

It is the size of the wheel stud - 3/8" UNF - that dictates the torque spec not the wheel nut sleeved or tapered.

40-42 ft/lbs is MAX, depending on lube.

I once had to tell a Mini Meet crew that they had to replace all 8 wheel studs on a Cooper S after they broke a second wheel stud...before they could take part in the standing start fast lap competition at Blackhawk Farms in Wisconsin.

Over tightening the wheel nuts will cause the stud to fail. If you think 50 ft.lbs. is OK be prepared for breakage.

Think about it - 3/8" coarse head studs go in the block hand tight, 3/8" UNF head stud nuts are + 40 ft. lbs. Why would the same bolt be different on the wheel??

They aren't different...torque is dependent on size, threads, material.

I once visited a friend's garage as he broke a double-nutted 3/8" head stud as he was cranking it into the block...fortunately the coarse threads proved no problem in extracting the bolt broken off at the block face.

Stud bolt torque is limited by coarse thread which is screwed into cast block, standard 8.8 3/8 fine thread bolt is good for 49 , refer chart, wheel studs are no different. M

For what it's worth, the Mini factory workshop manual (TP832) specifies 42 lbs/ft for the road wheel nuts, so that's the limit I'd be using.

interesting, I am wondering what original factory spec is for studs, all modern studs you would assume would be grade 8.8. M
