Anyone that has a persistantly weeping sump plug shoud try a liquid thread sealer. (like one of the white Loctite ones or similar)
Don't use thread tape.

BTW, When did the word "threaded" come to mean "stripped"?

I tried using aviation cement last time, the same I used on my engine which worked well. It lasted about 3 weeks before it started weeping again. But that wasn't on the thread, that was on the washer.

Prolly a queensland variation of the term threaded.

Legit where I come from!

The Crudman has issues. It has a bigger than standard plug in it... and it was done really badly. I don't know how it doesn't leak, as it wasn't drilled/tapped straight and hence the washer isn't doing a whole lot. I'm scared that next time I change the oil that I'll destroy whats actually keeping it from leaking.

Mick, I guess you could argue that yes, it's threaded but the pitch is zero. :lol:

@poeee,
The idea of fitting the threaded insert is that the hole in the gearbox doesn't need to be tapped dead square. Which is the downfall of trying to helicoil it and not have it leak.

Ok that's great news then, as the 'hard' part is done already.

Mick the one I made for you was the same as 4myego's he did one first.

I still have the drawing, somewhere. Will look for it.
[edit] found it. Now hosted with flickr.

If I make any more inserts, they will be in brass, not steel. Easier to thread on my little Myford bench lathe.

Ignore the copper washer shown, just Loctite the thread then screw it in.

yup that's the one.

Once i get my shed sorted out, i should be able to knock this out in steel on my 5" Primo. Will be a good project to learn how to thread on the lathe.

cheers
michael
