Well close to the centre  , you made me go out to the shed and have a look though, the one in the your picture is exactly the same as mine all but the colour.
I don't think a dealer could of retrofitted the speaker cutout into a new car back in the 60's or 70's you would have to remove the fuel tank to get it even close IMHO

That's pretty much the standard rear shelf , minis never came with radios , all radios and speakers were aftermarket fittings .The job you got pretty much depended on who fitted them. Some did a really nice job cutting the speaker hole , looks almost like factory ,but others were quite nasty

^unmolestered ex factory.
This panel hasn't seen 'updating' for speakers. Unsure why it had a hole?

jubblies mine is the same as yours just the one hole near the centre, so your shelf would be considered unmolested as well. Good to know. Seems that from Mini K either 1969 or 1970 onwards got the factory oval speaker cutout and the Cooper S never. Good way to pick all those re shelled MK2,s with K shells.

For those unfamiliar with the factory documentation that supported the production of the car we all love, below is the product engineering drawing for the MK II Cooper S rear parcel shelf assembly.

A few things to look at:

1. It's an assembly drawing so it shows how various components go together to make the final part. The part numbers of the components are shown and the type, number and position of welds is specified.
2. The part number is HYA7930. The Y in the second position of the prefix means this is an Australian part.
3. The First Used On field says YDO6, the factory code for an Australian MK II Cooper S.
4. There is reference to part HYA7167, which is the parcel shelf panel without its additions. There's a separate drawing for HYA7167 showing the dimensions and material used to make that panel.
5. The location and welding specification (1 spot weld per clip) for the fuel tank breather tube brackets (RBS0407, previously HYA1308) is shown.
6. The small centre hole referred to in an earlier post is shown, as is the oval hole and four bolt holes for a speaker on the driver's side, although its precise location is not mentioned.
7. The rear seat belt mountings are shown. I think there's a separate drawing showing how and where these are fixed.
8. The funny angled bracket that the boot lock tongue hits when you close the boot is shown (HYA7939), fixed by 5 spot welds.

Hopefully this answers more questions than it raises but please feel free to ask. :)

The small centre hole is most likely a tooling or assembly aid - for example if the panel was stamped in 2 processes it might be a location hole, similarly it could be a hand hole for assembling, or when the parts came out of the forming press they were slid onto a pole / hanger for use later.
Sometimes engineers are considerate and think about how to take things apart - since the parcel shelf and trims may have been or were glued down, a hole to poke something through to raise the shelf might be handy to get it out.

Funny how the drawings show the speaker position on the drivrs side and the Mini K has the cutout on the passengr side, both have the hole in the centre no seat belt holes in either.

Rear seat belts were not fitted back then. My 3/1970 car has none. Only the cops got them added.
I think were standard fitment from 1/72 on? Maybe.

I'm with ya Doc just that winabbey,s drawing mentions the seat belt fixing points I guess that was for the police specs vehicles.

You may be right, although the two anchorage points in my Police spec vehicle are in the centre of the parcel shelf towards the rear window, not in the position shown in the drawing.

The latest update to the drawing is November 1970. ADR4 and ADR5 covering seat belts and their anchorage points were effective from January 1971, meaning vehicles delivered from that date needed to comply. Clearly any design and component changes would need to be approved for production during 1970.

The change in the pressing is to do with the addition of rear belts.
It is not a Cooper S vs. Mini K thing.
