Hello!

OK, so I've been trying to suss out a coolant leak for a the past couple of days. I've found the issue. A pin hole in the pipe that goes from the head the the water pump (see attached)

Just wondering if this hose is a specific thing or not, it looks like some sort of ribbed hose at the moment but i can't seem to find the replacement part.

Can i just use a normal hose or can anyone tell me where i can get a replacement?

Hi Milly,

You can buy these special by pass hoses from most good mini shops.
The concetena makes it easier to replace without removing the head or water pump.
But I would recommend either a straight piece of 1/2" water hose or you can buy neoprene type which should outlast rubber.
To fit a straight piece of hose you will need to remove the radiator and water pump unless you are planning to remove the head. Removing the head is not really recommended just to fit a replacement hose.

+1 for the 1/2" Heater Hose. A bit of a bugger to get in there, but will last forever.

Yep , heater hose is the go , and buy 2 new hose clamps , it will make the job a bit easier , you will need to position them so that you can get to them with a screwdriver , yours looks like it has the original clamps on it
After you work out how long it needs to be , put a bit of lube on the inside of the hose to make it slip over the pipes .

Probably of no use to you but we used to, when doing a head repair, replace it with a piece of 1/2" a/c hose, cut about 1/4" too long. It no only lasted a gazillion years but didn't need hose clamps.

Cooper S had heater hose on the bypass for reliability.
Those concertina ones used on Minis originally were from the Morris Minor parts bin.
Recent ones are not well made.

1/2" vacuum hose works great too, it is thicker rubber, and oil resistant.

I just about getting around to doing this now, I've got the old hose off, looks like a pretty straight forward job. 2 new hose clips and a piece of good quality pipe should sort that easy..bit of silicone spray to get it on there!

I have a couple of brand new bypass hoses here , never used, 1 original , 1 newer version , and there's not a hope in hell that i'd use either of them on an engine , the later type seem too thin and wouldn't last in my opinion , that's why i'd use a piece of heater hose .

As for the doing the job of changing them , (here's a tip for the newbies ) if your not sure what condition yours is , or how old it might be , CHANGE it , put it in the shed , organise your tools & parts, take your time ,( as they can be a challenge ) , and change it . I say this because it is NOT the sort of job that you would want to tackle on the side of the road , say , when your you decide to go on your first mini run with a heap of others , it's just going to stuff your day 7 possibly your engine .

Bottom radiator hose is just as bad a scenario .

Heater hose does it fine, but for AU4.67, its reinforced in kevlar, and even cut to length.

I asked my local mini mechanic about this a while ago as mine was leaking. He just cut a few cm of 1/2" heater pipe for me, and recommended using a pair of needle-nose pliers to work it in. Took a bit of fiddling, but worked just fine and is still going strong.
