Hey guys

I pulled down the motor on the new deluxe today.

It has an MED centre main strap.

Now the thing I am wondering is what grade bolts should becin there? MED supplied all the bits for the motor including the main strap and when I pulled it apart I noticed it had grade 3 bolts for the main strsp.

I would have expected med to supply the bolts for the strap so are these right or are the something the previous owner has grabbed from bunnings?

Cheers

Rodney

I would expect them to be supplied, grade 8.8 at the least. I would look at replacing them.

I'd use some decent 10.9 cap head bolts with hardened washers.

Think I remember reading a few years ago MED had an issue with one of their suppliers sending the wrong grade bolts. Was one of the UK forums.

If there are 3 lines on the head they are grade 5.
Should be grade 8 (these have 6 lines), or better.

Grade 8.8 is used for metric bolts, is weaker than grade 8.

It's not as though 7/16 UNF Grade 8 bolts are hard to get. Should be available from any decent fastener place.
I bought mine from Lee Bros Engineering.
They don't seem to have a website.

Centre straps are not really needed on a road motor, as the caps only break when you zing the motor to a zillion rpm on downshifts.
However if the cap has been thinned down to fit a strap, the cap is weakened so don't run it without one fitted.

Yeah I think the only reason a strap was fitted was because of the supercharger. Its there now so it has to stay.

And yeah im not convinced on the grade 5 bolts do im off to the bolt shop this morning (we didnt have any in stock at work)

I put arp on my centre strap and other caps, had to mod the housing to make it fit.

You should be able to get Cap Screws in 12.9, but they're only in metric. You'll need at least Grade 8 for Imperial, which is roughly equivalent to 10.9 Metrics.

Hey guys,

Is the centre main strap a solid piece or is there an oil pick up hole in it? On the 1098 there is a threaded hole on the centre cap, what happens to this when you machine the centre down flat to put in a centre strap?

All the pics I've seen of the centre main straps look to be solid..

Curious..
