I am having an issue with my 1972 clubman 1100, engine is basically standard with a 1 1/2 SU, electric fuel pump with regulator. The car starts fine on choke and once warmed up will idle OK off choke, idle set at about 1100 rpm. However when driving the car and changing gear or coming to a stop, when the clutch is depressed the revs fall off very quickly and the car goes to stall. If I have quick feet and give the throttle a blip it will come good but it the idle is much lower and needs a bit of choke to stop it stalling.
When I then stop the car at home and take the choke off it will usually idle OK and there is no need to increase the idle speed. Want to have a look at it over the weekend, any ideas ?

Sounds like it may be a little lean. If I take my choke off too soon, when stopping and putting in the clutch the revs will drop and it can stall. Try winding your mixture screw out one or two flats to see if that makes a difference.

If it appears to stall only when the clutch is depressed, then it could be a crank thrust bearing issue.

Next time you warm up the engine, while stationary and no gear selected, push the clutch in and see if the revs drop significantly or tries to stall. If it does, it's a crank thrust issue I believe, not a carby / mixture issue.

You could get the same symptoms from a stuffed throw-out bearing, but that is more likely to cause a lot of noise before anything else.

Wind the mixture screw on the bottom of the carbie out a few flats and see if it is any different :)

My thoughts are that you have no oil in the dash pot. Check it and if empty put a bit of oil in. I use
Air tool oil myself..

Thanks for the thoughts guys:

@boomini - i'll check the dashpot oil first but think it should be OK (famous last words)
@i got a mini and Irish yobbo - I will try adjusting the mixture and see if that is it
@timmy 201 - yes it runs fine whilst in gear under power or even when the engine is braking when slowing down, its only as the clutch is depressed that the revs drop off, not a major problem when changing down gears but when you finally stop at the lights it goes to stall.
@mini VLT - I have not noticed the revs dropping when I depress the clutch when stationary but will check this also.

I don't know if its related but I have also noticed that when travelling at a consistent speed on the freeway it can sometimes seem like its hesitating a little or slowing off, press down on the pedal and it perks up fine.

Decided to play with the carb this afternoon. Pulled it appart to check the dash pot oil first. The level seemed fine but decided to give it all a clean while I had it apart. Topped it back up, Am giving 20w 50 engine oil a go and will see how it works. Adjusted the carb by 2 flats to richen the mixture, warmed the car up and re set the idle and then took it for a little drive. It's like a new car, idles nicely at 1100rpm, throttle is more responsive, pulls harder and even sounds better. Happy days, thanks for your collective help guys. :-)

What I prefer to do is make 1 change at a time so you know what you did to fix it. So next time you know what too do..

sorry Simo I only saw this thread now, was home most of the w/e
now have a look at your plugs to give a mixture indication
there is always a godd range of suggestions when it comes to pot oil, can be easy to get misled.

Thanks guys

@boomini I know what you mean a bout changing one thing at a time, seeing as when I checked the dashpot oil was at a good level I crossed this of the list just topped up and took the liberty of going with the next change. You are right though probably should have taken it for a little drive first and then adjusted the mixture.

@Diesel27 I didn't have much time after my drive on Sunday, so will pull the plugs out after its next trip and see what they are telling me.
