That elastic was common in car and furniture upholstery, now days its a wider elastic webbing thats more stretchy. I replaced mine with the more common elastic which is a bit wider but you just reuse the old hooks off the old elastic on the new elastic.

Make sure the stapes are nice and tight esp if u use the modern stuff. New foam and elastics make a huge difference to the seats comfort.

Found some pics of when I did mine, old elastic was mummified.

I tried to match the way the original foam was done too, gives the seat a nice shape. There were even some extra foam panels for lumbar support.

BMC actually had a pretty good reputation for doing comfy seats if you read the old reviews.

My seats had those straps also.
Newton Commercial said they replace them with the wire and springs setup now

Local motor trimmer. Any upholstery place would have it. I think I've even seen it at CLARK rubber or similar. Actually after I did mine I saw the brown stuf somewhere too. It's got a special name I can't think of right now. Used in a lot of furniture and much firmer (probably better)

I did mine my self with no experience with upholstery just copied how the original foam was cut etc. You need a quality foam spray contact to glue the foam to the frame and itself.

Note also the extra blocks of foam under the old base that give the seat a nice curve, rather than looking flat and extra sheets in lumbar area too.

Just remembered that old beige webbing is called pirelli webbing. Still available but that narrower width BMC used might be harder to find now days.

The strapping from my seats are 30mm wide. 38mm looks about the smallest it goes?

Sooooo I dont know which one to go here....

Seems I can get the old style of straps.... and use like that horse hair stuff to cover it..? I dont care about originality, just comfort, what is going to be more comfortable??

Using the straps and horse hair? Or using the rubber mat bottom with spring back and foam???

Image

Like this style but using foam covering the back??

Image

This is the foam for the back

I would steer clear of the rubber bases. The original ones were very good quality and lasted many years. However the rubber bases now days seem to be poor quality. Sometimes split after a couple of years. Some sort of wire springs probably better. If you use straps they need to be firm and tight.

The foam I just bought and cut out myself. The good thing is you can experiment with the layering and thickness of the foam and slip the cover on and try it. Once happy then glue foam in place. I added an extra layer to my base to make it firmer.

The way the foam is trimmed depends on the style the vinyl is trimmed. That the bottom pic is the earlier pattern with the bolster panel at the front.
