It would probably work if it was only oil that was going back into the ground (and as long as it was going to the same place it came from) but your used engine oil contains contaminates from the combustion process some of which are very toxic.

So if you are tipping your used oil into the ground you are a dickhead of the highest order.

Is that a serious comment?

Have a look at whats in the oil and the process it has undergone to get to the stage it is in when you buy it. Now compare it to where in the ground it came from and what state it was in.

My local transfer station offers free disposal of oil and containers, but they charge for recycling and greenwaste.

You know your local workshops that collect oil from servicing cars, there are companies that come and suck it out of their waste storage tanks FOR FREE! That's because there is money in it.

So besides all the places that you can hand in used oil, if you ask a local workshop nicely and if they are nice people, they will probably take your oil because all it will cost them is the conversation and tipping it into their tank. (they might even let you do it yourself)

I just take it to the tip when I go there every six months. They have recycling tanks for oil and brake fluid. Just pour the oil in and throw the empty container in the skip provided. Or put the container back in the trailer to take home for refilling. Easy.

Mate of mine has a large farm and strangely every so often the dirt road along side his property changes colour to a rich black. There also happens to be a spray unit 1000 litre that usually hides inside a shed with lots of junk covering it and no-one knows what its for! But there is never any dust around the house.

I always thought one of the advantages of driving a British built designed car was, you never needed to change the oil as it was constantly leaking out everywhere anyway and you just had to keep it topped up!
