I've been busy planishing the dented floor panels on the 997 Cooper to get them back to shape, and I only just noticed this morning that the upper and lower dash rails were removed at some stage, and then later replaced. The firewall panel in front of it is otherwise untouched, but the dash has been stitched back in place.

I am thinking it had some kind of custom alloy (race?) dash put in at some point, but always thought they were just boxed around the existing rails.

Can anyone tell me why someone would want to remove the upper and lower dash rails in any kind of context other than crash damage? As the bulkhead is otherwise perfect.

I can think of at least one reason for changing a dash....

Me either, considering ordering a new panel from the UK next time I order parts. It is too visible for my liking for half hearted repairs so I think replacement is going to have to be the go  Guess if I order an upper dash I may as well get a lower as well.....
