Shouldn't a 1970 Mk2S have a body prefix of YG2S4, not YKG2S4? They had dropped the K by then...!

Yes
The K only showed up in early publications. Was never stamped on a vehicle. The after market body plate should be removed and it should be registered using the original chassis numbers or issued with new numbers from the transport department. Not sure why the builder keeps using the K and how it is getting past rego.

Is it the same car that Westwazza mentions here?

Quote:
After trolling all the usual places, I came across a nice advertised Mk2 Cooper S in the Sunshine Coast of Qld. I made the call, got some details from the owner who said the car was a genuine Mk2 S and he was the second owner since a full rebuild about 12 years ago. He told me that an ex race driver named Paul Gulson had built the car. I knew the name, did a little background research later and found his mini history and racing history. (3rd Bathurst 1980 etc etc...) He said to ring Paul as he would be able to provide some more details about the car. This owner had never spoken to Paul Gulson about his car.

I rang Paul and he remembered the car, building it and what it started life as. That wasn't a Cooper S. It was something rather less that had been built into a very nice 'replica' with most details correct. He told me details of the build and that it would be a very nice car if it had been maintained, which I believe it had been. That news of it being a replica was disappointing as I really was after a genuine car. I told Paul that I was looking for a genuine car.

It sounds like the gift that keeps on giving.

Maybe this theory if for example yg2s4 123 is already out there and registered you build a bodgy put a k in it like the publication says and you prove that at rego time with the bmc documemt you end up with ykg2s4 123 it would be another car that doesn't conflict with the system that would be my theory

Can't wait for the OFT to take down those who do this. Watch ACA.
