Well I can say that my '78 has a handbrake light. No idea where the lamp is mounted as half the dash is missing and I haven't followed the wire. Haven't checked for side intrusion bars but it's unlikely.

Side intrusion bars were required as part of ADR29 (Side Door Strength) introduced in January 1977. I assume all vehicles delivered from that date would have to have these (except the Moke  ). Perhaps someone who regularly dismantled Minis of that era could comment, say Matt Read?

Maybe they met ADR 29 without needing any extra work?

The hand brake light lived in the top dash pad next to the brake failure light.

Just asked John Smidt about this. He dismantled quite a few of the last Minis produced in Australia and, according to him, none had any form of intrusion bar modification to the doors. The increasing requirements of ADR's during the 1970's was one of the main reasons manufacture of the Mini was discontinued in Australia.

I've heard it said that late model Mokes didn't meet ADR requirements for the period, something related to seatbelt mounts I think. The story was that the company was clearly in so much trouble that the authorities allowed them to bend the rules for a couple of years, until they could engineer a solution. They went bust first.

Moke seatbelts complied to the rules at the time. I don't think there was any rule bending.
Leyland didn't go bust when they stopped making Minis and Mokes. The company was profitable. Building Minis and Mokes wasn't profitable though.

I have a 1978 1275LS and it had no side intrusion bars in the doors.
It does have handbrake warning light and brake fail light which I have reconnected in the rebuilt car.
I don't think I found child restraint anchors either

michaelb, the child restraint rule at the time was just to have a hole, it didn't need a captive nut yet.
Look under the parcel shelf and you will find the holes alongside the top seat belt mount points.

Probably best to ask the people who can do the compliance on newer Mini's imported from Japan.

I think the problem you will find is just because leyland didn't put side intrusion bars in after jan 77 and obviously were able to get it approved for meeting ADR 29, you are unlikey to find an engineer to sign off on it. If they read "side intrusion bars" they're going to want to see side intrusion bars even if leyland managed to prove (we assume) the doors were already strong enough. If the car is an import that argument would go out the window anyway as the doors aren't the same as the aussie version structurally. As said by pooee, find out what is done to non aussie built minis to get them to comply and duplicate it.
