I think that would be the difference between the screw on cable type and the clip on cable type of speedos.
I can't imagine it would hurt to trim the hole.

Just because people had a part that was no good or failed it does not mean that all parts of that type are no Good. You find that most times the part failed due to bad use or connecting by incompetent owner. There are many good original tachos still around. There are also ones that wire up differently so one has to be sure what they are doing as you do not get two chances with connecting electrical and electronic components.
