Hi Guys. We are not far off painting the Cooper s. We are going to stay in with the original colour. It is Jet Red no white roof. We are going to paint it in Acryllic not 2 pack as most agree that it is the way to go as far as original looks. Can anybody help with suggestions as to the best brand paint & where would I get the paint from. Will they know the correct mix for the paint. Are they able to mix from the old Dulon mix numbers?

I do have a tin of Jet Red (More appropriately, the painter's approximation of Jet Red) here, and I also have a couple of pieces of factory Jet Red panel as well.
Unfortunately I don't have the code, but have been meaning to have the code recreated from a nice piece of polished up panel.

hmm, it's a late colour so should be mixable... I got a tin of Camino Gold mixed based on the number on the sticker on my firewall.

Yep I'd recommend PPG. See the following info form for one I got from them. Shows the sort of info that helps them search. YEAR, OEM paint colour number (use the scanned in paint charts on this forum - sorry I don't have link right now, another kind Ausmini user might post it). And the OEM colour name.

Also note, most Aus BMC colours in their system are under "Leyland". And also the Paraglaze below is a 2Pack product. But they cross reference it to other paint types etc. it can be hit or miss as to which mixing method codes they have but they will likely have it.

Just a heads up PPG have introduced a new system for the Paraglaze range so that formula will only be usable if your supplier has old stock, most BMC colours have been transferred to the new system though a lot of the less used colours have not and have to be requested ie lead time required. Pretty sure I saw Jet Red in the new system though as it is a common colour.

If you get it mixed from the code it will only ever be an approximation of the original colour. It will not be the same.
The tints have been changed over the years so it will not be 100% accurate.

I got my (Concept Paints) Jet Red 2 pack mixed a few years ago by VG Auto Paints. I also have a tin of their Jet Red acrylic, although that was mixed years before. So they do have the codes for Jet Red, but as Morris says the tints now are different.

I've always used Protec 330 acrylic. I had my Scarlet O Hara paint retinted as it wasn't quite the colour I was after, it was more reddy than orange. Don't be afraid to get it retinted slightly like the others above have said. Nothing worse than looking at a car that isn't quite the right colour. Be warned though once you get it retinted from the original mix it's hard to get more paint mixed to EXACTLY the right shade.

Protec is a PPG product if I'm not mistaken. I got my Paraglaze directly from PPG themselves, not through a supplier and they made Sapphire Blue and Snow White in the latest mixes I believe. I have no idea how much they match the originals.

I agree with what everyone else says above re different codes, new versions, changes slightly between paint recipes etc etc.

I spoke at length with PPG. By the way I was very impressed with them. I went to one of their branches/offices. They invited me behind the desk, I sat there pouring over their computer with them, searching all sorts of things, codes, different names, various paint systems, multiple computer databases.

Went in there twice actually. It would have been a couple of hours all up. They offered me tea and coffee and everything. Since I originally only had the smallest size samples made up, they refused to take money from me, saying 'just buy the paint from us when you're ready to do the job'. I had to force them to take some cash from me, which they begrudgingly did. I told them to put on a slab or something (it was like 3:30pm Fri) which eventually lead them to say yes :)

Pretty good experience really and there was nothing in it for them to offer that to me, it's not like I was a big industrial customer or anything.

Colour also changes slightly depending on spray gun and conditions as I found out recently when touching up one of my cars with paint from same can. It was colder day and the shade is visibly different? Acrylic paint in garage....

I have spoken with someone in the auto paint industry and he has explained as others have here that because the tints are a essentially a natural product they will have varied over the years.

Many company's can take a scan of the paint on the car (or a part) to get a formula that is close to correct. Then the tint is carefully matched by eye to get the final result/formula.

I got codes done for my car and it seems it took about 3 or 4 sample mixes after the initial scan to get a perfect match.

I work for PPG and can recommend the original colour standard for Jet Red if that helps? The original jet red colour is an ICI colour and in 2K Deltron clear over base technology use 426-BEL5.
