There was a set of plates with the car but I think they are off something else. There is a lot of bits and these were in a box. It's off a 1970 so it's not related.

no no no no, you're wrong - those plates are definitely off the car - 100% positive - unless vicroads wants to prove different ;)

I had something similar happen when I tried to register my 68 minimatic. As it was only ever registered in South Australia, at the time they only ever recorded the engine number of the car when it was first registered. They never noted a body number. So when I bought the car and brought it back to melbourne, and tried to register it, they wouldn't accept the body number I provided as it had never been in any system even thought I provided the correct engine number and the previous South Australian number plate and told me I would need to get a new body number stamped by the victorian police once it had been fully checked to ensure it wasn't on any stolen register in any states. They mentioned this was 2-3 month process and I would be liable for all fees. Or, I could just put the car on club permit as long as it was in roadworthy condition. So I did that instead :)

Absolutely, breathtakingly, bureaucratically bunglingly, waste of time and money - petty officialdom at its finest

[how do these people sleep at night!]

When I went to vic roads to register my mini. They still Had archive records, last registered in 1983. I could get original rego number but would be an extra $5oo  maybe later
I still have the rego receipt for 1983 was $33. the person behind the counter couldn't believe the price

As are thousands of others in SA. I don't think they really started recording chassis numbers until the early 80's. '86 or 88 was when the ISO VIN was adopted under the Third Edition ADR's and they had to record them.
A bit silly really not recording the chassis numbers as engines would often be changed.
Though not as silly as the Vicroads position of not believing it has been registered in Australia before if it has not been registered in Victoria!
It is probably difficult to find proof that your FJ Holden is not imported

Love the imported FJ crack...I learned to drive in a 56 Special Sedan :D
(and noting that the first 5? prototypes were built in Canadia???)

But seriously, what really gets up my nose is the Road "Authority" staff having that "we are right and everyone else is wrong" attitude when their databases are known to be corrupt...

add the disparity across each and every state and their interpretation of the "National" rules....

and ohhhhhh by the way, there are Highway Parking cops (don't patrol too much these days) out there using these data sets to hang people with over their rego etc

Think I need to go lie down :!:
