Its a switch pull on push off it has a wire that feeds of the light switch, if its not standard what would normally be in this position?

I removed the heater to sort the messy wiring out, the heater is a cooper s one which isn't original, is this the location where the heater switch would be?

Yes , not sure what model your car is, but the Mini K , Cooper S is in that position , albeit a different looking knob on the cable , but yes they are push / pull .

Minis didn't have push pull electrical switches and the 'heater switch' for the Cooper S is actually a control cable located on the left side for the Mk1 and right side for the Mk2 ,with the choke on other side. The Cooper S heater has an on/off switch mounted on the unit for the fan. Mini Deluxe ,Matic,Mini Minor etc usually have the windscreen washer pump mounted on right side ,with choke a T piece to the right of that under dash, and if fitted with a heater, the control is on left side
