they just expect you to take power from the reversing lights... it's not like you can't take power from the ignition to have them on constantly

Sorry I missed this earlier.
Our trucks have them. They come on automatically in reverse and we also have a manual switch. My one is on all the time except at night. They are great.

I was under the impression all vams where 1100s. I have a 4/78 leyland van nearly identical to your but white. Wat have I got. I cant find any solid info.

People change engines out all the time :-). I have since sold the van to concentrate on restoring my mini k and finishing off mini Moke ! Three was bleeding me dry, lol
