I want to buy a quality brake line flaring tool that will work on steel bundy tubing - such as the "Sykes-Pickavant Flaremaster 2".
1. Any recommendations?
2. What is the flare called that looks like an onion bulb in profile - as used on many mini joints?
3. Does the onion bulb flare, when collapsed in on itself, become a 'double flare'?
Thanks
Bill

2. ball flare? I don't know if it has a particular name but that gets used a bit i think.
3. A double flare is formed when you have a ball flare and perform a single flare on it.

As for the first question, if i was looking at another flare tool i would definitely consider those sykes-pickavant ones if i had the money. They look so quick and easy to use.
I've used one of those really cheap tools before and it was neither quick nor easy, although it does work. I normally use an old school one at work which is a bit hard to describe but i haven't seen anything like it for sale when i was having a look a few years ago.

Hi Bill
1) I use a Laser brake pipe flaring tool , you can get them through John at Mini Kingdom on Line
2) This flare , convex flare , single flare , There are 2 types of this flare , UNF which is 45 deg face and 45 deg back
Metric , Din , is 45 deg face and 90 deg back
the Leyland code for these type is DT1
3) This type has a few names , Double flare , inverted flare , trumpet flare . yes a double flare starts as a convex flare
Leyland code for this type is DT4
you can not start with the din type flare , you can make a trumpet flare without step 1 but I think these were more for fuel pipes not brake pipes
Hope this helped
You live not far from me , If you would like to see some samples of these , give me a yell

Mark

I have used a lot of different types over the years, but for 'off the car' work I like the Eastwood one the best and would buy one of I could afford it.

I can endorse the Eastwood unit. After trying several of the cheaper designs over the years, I bit the bullet and bought one of those when building the Marcos. It works brilliantly every time and it's paying for itself by being able to do jobs for others. Even managed to do a job on a car by clamping the tool to the chassis  .

What would be the rough cost to get all new brake lines made up?
I understand if I have them all in hand, and give them to a brake shop they will reproduce them?
Or am I better off buying or borrowing a tool to do it myself

That's great, I didn't know anyone did that, I think I'll be buying from there, that should make it real easy!
I added the items up for an early mini, just over $200 for all lines, I reckon

Yeah I bought the Eastwood one too and it's too easy. Well worth the investment it even handled stainless fuel lines

Thanks everyone for your comments. I have always had Burt Bros make up my brake lines, as it used to be fairly cheap. A friend has 4 minis to rebuild (if he lives so long) and I was planning on going halves with him. Will check the Eastwood youtube instructions.

To revive an old thread.
Has anyone used a Draper hand held brake flaring tool or similar?
Only does 3/16, but that's all I need - probably do two or three Mini's with it.
About 1/3 the price of the Eastwood, or $250 towards other bits for the Mini.
Any comments on them?
