Another thing that could contribute is your engine mounts. Some of the newer mounts are thicker than the old ones - I had a nightmare getting my engine back in. But that could get the engine sitting a few mm higher.

That is what I was considering. How obvious is the difference i wonder. The current mounts have been there since well before my ownership. I've never had the engine out, but I've had both mounts off at different times and never had any problems refitting.

Phill - I'll do some measurements tomorrow across the guards as you did. Too dark and the spiders and creepy crawlies come out to play so the garage is all theirs at night time. :)

Phill.

White bar is resting on the top of the guards directly above the oil filler cap. Distance from the cap knob to bar is about 7-8mm.

If I do that with my cap on the cap would touch the bar.

So my engine sits nearly 10mm higher. How is that even possible???? And before anyone asks, yes, my oil cap is identical to Dougs.

I'll take some pics of the engine mounts when I get a chance.

If the engine mounts have the holes offset one way between the two plates it could make the engine sit high, or possibly the rubber is too thick?

Quinton Hazell's mounts had the hole spacing `plate to plate' too close by 4mm. This made them hard to fit, but resulted in the motor sitting lower if anything.
I used them by slotting the holes <2mm-2mm> in the mill so they fit properly.
I believe since QH went belly up recently you can't buy these mounts now.
