That's how mine is done too. A decent power feed fire from the solenoid's battery stud, earth the relay, and you're done.
Mine is a New Era one with 2x 30A blade fuses in it.

if your asking if you can control the relays by having the wire that goes to your headlights go to the relay, then yes, but you will need to have a wire that goes from relay to other headlight

Sorry to revive this old thread but have a question regarding the relays into the lights.

I have mounted four relays behind the screen washer bottle...one each for hi, low lights, one for horn and one for the fuel pump. I read convertible minis "How to..." And makes sense. However, can I not cut the loom and just button into the terminals that connect into the lighting loom at the drivers side front and run the relays from there? I am baulking at cutting into the pretty new wiring loom cotton that's all.

Thanks in advance.

I would put them on the drivers side where the blue/white and blue/red wires come down the firewall.
Cut tag and screw the wires to the relays, add 12V feed from the battery cable, and an earth wire and you're done.
If you leave them near the washer bottle you would have to run 4 wires across the firewall, + 12V feed and earth.Image

Thea-mar-etically speaking, the closer you can place the relays to the headlights and short-run heavy gauge cable to them ... the better.

Just be considerate to others, the current dumbed-down road rules talk about dipping at 200 metres (AFAIR)...my rule is if you can see the tail lights of a car in front, then dip em! Similarly, as soon as you spot (no pun intended) someone oncoming, dip em

This is about as close as they are going to get Mick...

Lights are fused to the relays...have four relays there and the two fused ones are for high and low circuits...and last two are for horn(which I am hard wiring as I have given up sorting the indicator stalk!!)and fuel pump.

Just have to tidy it all up when I am done buttoning it all in.

Pfft the only reason they are where they are is there were holes already in place...my inner guard looks like Swiss cheese :D

The hard thing was hitting the new virgin paint with a wire wheel to get a good earth...I cringed with every second passing and waiting for the wheel to scoot across the entire panel.

So why does the factory not install a relay for the original lights. If you are not increasing your wattage by more than a few watts you will have no problems. The switch & dip switch are designed to carry the wattage . Cheers

Factories do many weird and wonderful things....1980s Volvo switched the headlights from under the dash...go figure!

Manufacturers still baffle me...the patrols right up to 2000 didn't have relays on their lights...looked like candles behind glass and the indicator stalk was warm to the touch due to the voltage running directly through 3mm wire...first thing I did was get a plug and play loom from narva and install it...lights are perfect now and no more hot indicator stalk.

False economy in my eyes.

Relays cost money, BMC didn't fuse the headlights either. Anything to save a penny.
Considering the quality? of new aftermarket Mini blinker switches now, I'd not replace one without adding relays..! :)

Rover later did fuse the headlights, around 1994 IIRC. very accessible right behind the dashboard .... with the bayonett style fuse holder that tend to melt .... and only fails around midnight when you're in a hurry ...

later they stopped the fun with a "real" fuse box, and, you guessed it, still no relay.

maybe someone should come out with a modern style wiring harness, with fuse and relay box, as a direct replacement. with modern small size fuses and relays it could work
