I've seen kits where if the car is broken into and the door shut again, a smoke bomb goes off in the car, so people can't see out the window!

my old physics teacher built his own one of these out of bits from dick smith, he put it in his camry. when you turn the key without putting the code in first it sounds the horn

I just bought one of these keypad kits from Dicks < $50 for my house.
They work off 12V, have a stainless steel keypad, and have outputs for solenoids, tamper, alarm system, etc.
Could make for a cheap alternative to a proper car alarm, but would not satisfy most insurers.

For shits and giggles, I've got an RFID keytag and reader for my mini.

when the central locking kit decides to make itself easy to install, it'll activate that, and the killswitch.
all you do then, is get in the car, flip an internal killswitch, and press the start button

The easiest way to make sure nobody breaks in to your 850, is to not park it in high crime areas..... like Melbourne

Sliding windows can easily be opened with a ruler as far as I know, making security a hassle. You're probably best off with an immobiliser and maybe an alarm too - rigged to the doors, boot and bonnet. Make sure there is nothing worth stealing inside - if you have speakers, bolt them down with security screws perhaps to make it hard to steal.

Microwave sensors are great in theory, but..... a pain in the arse to set up, and annoying if you leave your car outside and the neighbourhood cat walks past! Remember if you want an alarm make sure it is installed well, and has battery backup if possible - I wouldn't have thought it would be hard to bend under a Mini and cut the power line, and then no more alarm!

Glass break sensors would be nice but they're hard to test unless you smash one of your windows.... and pointless if you have tint.

So the lesson is here, if you don't want you car broken into, park it next to your bed

Oh and remember the steering lock - they are a great visual tool, and good to beat people who try to flog your car. There is a reason they come mainly in red

I'm going to get a system with multipoint immobilisers, and protect the doors, boot, bonnet, etc.
I'm also going to run a second power line through the car for the alarm, as well.
I don't like clublocks. They're easy to break off if you know what you're doing as well.

On sliding windows you can fit the locks they use on glass display cases in retail stores. They require no mods to fit as they are just a barrel lock that slides over a bracket with teeth on the bracket for the lock to engage on.

Have a look around the next time you are shopping, you will probably see what I mean.

RE SOLEX LOCKS

About a month ago i bout a set of those solex locks.
so far i have found them great. they are relatively easy to install and sem prety secure. it jsut requires a bit of filing to ur current door lock hole!

Got a part number for those locks BeanMe?

I asked a while back and couldn't get a response. Nor could anyone that sold the things give me an answer.....

Hey people,

For all interested.....
I spoke to the Solex Engineer a couple of months ago about the locks and minis.

They aren't going to develop any at this stage but if you buy the generic 2 door set available from anybody who sells solex locks, you'll need to file the original holes down to fit them but they will work.

I'm going to be fitting them soon, and will post pics and measurements.

Hey awdmoke,

I was thinking of grafting a pair of late Nissan Maxima door handles on to the mini doors.

You know, the ones with the in-built 6-digit keypad that are actually in the handle.
I though that would look kinda cool.
