Is the 940 head on a small bore block worth it?

In bang for buck terms.

Other than the block pocketing, is there anything else that needs to be cut/shaved/waxed  to get the head to fit. I vaguely recall hearing something about waterways needing re-alignment.

What's it cost in the end, head plus butchery.

My new signature got me thinking...

Morris 850 with 998 engine with 1098 internals..... may aswell finish "the mongrel" off with a 1275 head :)

940 head on a pocketed block... Do it. :P
Back in the 60s BMC UK offered it as a go-faster kit for 850 and 998..

I had one years ago on a 1098 bored to 1220cc, in a light 850. Works 544 cam, twin Amal Monobloc carbs- then twin HS4s, it was revved (too often) past 8500 and did low 16s at Castlereagh dragstrip.

It was fun, while it lasted. At 20,000 miles, a circlip broke, gudgeon pin scored the bore, new crank had 8 cracks already. Oh well... I then got a 1275, but it didn't go as hard.

yeah i agree with the dr,i had a 998 with a full 12g940 race head and scatter pattern race cam on it years ago and it rev'd harder than my 1380 motor which was a similar spec.i think on dyno it made 54 kw at the wheels which is unreal for a 998
only thing extra than pocketing block is possibly filing down the water pump alloy housing on its topside as they sometimes wont let the head seal down properly(after 2 blown headgaskets found this out)
might do another of these engines as i have a 997 cooper motor with pockets in it already with a 998 crank and centre main strap mmmmmmmmmm

right.... so the next steps are ..

What does it take to get the block pocketed? casho , etc..

is there any other work other than the pocketing needed?

How much is a stock 940 these days? and who's got one?

and , again :), i use the 1275 head gasket and lcb exhaust?

would my 1.5" su be ok?

yes cash is the needed thing to do this
no other work is needed(just check water pump clearance)
stock 940 heads are plentiful i have a few of them for $180 each complete with valves and springs inn s/hand condition
1.5 inch carby is ok but if you want more power chuck on a 1 3/4 ($120 for a hif series :ie float bowl built onto bottom of carb )or a weber big $$$$
regards josh

I have heard that a stock 940 head outflows a worked 295 head, so there, for wot it's worth.
BTW you don't need dirty big valves for this on a 998/1098, stocko 1100S or 1275LS (or stock Metro) ones are fine.
Fit decent double valve springs and a cam though.
