What size is the standard thread?

Standard sump plug thread is 5/8" UNC.
Most folks use a helicoil (or recoil) kit to restore the original size.
Recoil kit is good- by using a stepped tap, it uses the remains of the original thread to cut a new bigger one, aligned properly so there is less chance of the sump plug washer not sitting flat.
After cutting the thread and cleaning out, you wind a recoil/helicoil SS thread insert in and you're done.
Can do in situ, on car. Use a bottle of cheap oil to flush the swarf out before refilling.

When taping the thread use plenty of grease on the tap to catch the swarf.
